This is a really scary prospect, especially since I had studied abroad halfway around the world, myself. I can't imagine how his family must feel right now, being at best a 25-30 hour trip away by plane. I never like saying stuff like this, but those kids should seriously be locked away for life, all of them. I'm glad one of their bonds was set at $1 million.

I have two reactions:

1. What a horrible thing to happen

2. This is a perfect example of why you shouldn't prosecute teenagers as advlts. The brain isn't full formed for a 15 year old. That's why this stuff happens. That's not to say the kids aren't idiots who should be punished, but yeah, their lives will be ruined over something obviously stupid that they did at 15, 16, or 17.

You make this sound like they just knocked over someones mailbox. But they murdered a man in cold blood. Justice demands they be punished in kind. If I had it my way, I'd have them all beheaded, hung or lose branded with 'murderer' as penance for their crimes. The moment you can decide right and wrong actions is the moment you are capable of moral actions. They don't deserve to get off on a 'oh they're just kids, these things happen.' sympathies. When I was a bored teen, and I know this will shock you, I didn't go around shooting people for giggles. I played video games or slept.

It's one thing when a kid that age gets busted selling drugs or something like that, but a whole other universe when they murder someone just for kicks. I'm sorry, but these three deserve to have their lives ruined. They did a real good job ruining their victim's life.

Sorry, missed a contraction there. But yeah, I'm all for punishing them. They're definitely stupid. On the other hand, the prefrontal cortex (basically the impulse control part of the brain) isn't fully formed in teenagers. I just don't think it is logical to say "Oh, we'll accept that a kid isn't an advlt unless they really screw up, in which case we'll treat them like the advlt that the screw up proved they aren't." Punish them yes, that's fine, but don't pretend that they're advlts and prosecute them as such. They aren't.

And by ruining their lives, the victim will pop out of the ground all better? A whole different universe, yes, punish them as such, but they're not advlts, and they didn't think about this crime like an advlt would have.

I don't look at it from a perspective age, but a moral complex. Even if you don't feel the 'general consensus of normal society's morals'. that's one thing, but If you murder someone with no justification, I believe you should be executed in kind or publicly shamed for the rest of your life. You say 'this will ruin their lives', but they ruined his life. Call me 'extremely old school' or 'barbaric', but I believe firmly in situations like this that a life for a life is only what can fix this. Same as a thief or smuggler should lose fingers. a hand or be branded a thief. Prison should only be an extra punishment to reaffirm justice into their minds. If these people can't behave like decent human beings on the outside, they deserve to be put on the inside.

I'm heated over this, yes, but they ruined a life with no cause, I see no reason not to ruin theirs.

Edit: Left out a bit I'd meant to post.

So all juveniles should be charged as an advlt under any circumstance?

No it won't make the victim better, but at least they won't have the chance to make someone else the next victim in a couple of years, when they'd be let out if they were tried as juveniles.

I don't believe people should be 'tried as advlts'. I believe people should be charged based on their crime regardless of age. If a ten year old boy 'graqes' a girl, I expect him to be arrested and punished as severely as a grown man. Justice shouldn't show leniency based on age, six, or sixual preference.

So we'll thoroughly institutionalize them, and make damn sure they're criminals when they get out in 10? Here's my point Gator, a kid is a kid. It doesn't matter what crime they committed. Now, should we perhaps look into the idea that yes, a juvenile should still be in jail after his (or her) 18th birthday, I will concede that point. I just don't see how a larger screw up means a kid is an advlt. That's my point here.

So you believe in chopping off five year old's fingers for stealing? Okay. We'll have to agree to disagree.

Another gun crime how shocking. . . . . . . NOT

An gun lobbyists say that their ain't a gun problem.

Seriously screw the second amendment to bear arms an ban guns already let the whiny pussies complain or just shoot them until they get inline.

Anyway if your old enough to commit a crime your old enough to do the time which I'm hoping will be death but not before the entire prison make them their [censored]es.

Hadn't these morons ever heard of burning ants or burning old barns down an property damage like every normal teenager.
