Teleporting and immersion

Post » Sun Aug 11, 2013 6:48 am

Allowing people from everwhere in the world to every shrine they want breaks immersion for me..

However... Telporting from shrine to shrine where those shrines work as portals works better for me, on top of that there could be a high level hard to get spell, that allows players with the right knowledge to teleport from anywhere in the game to any shrine they want...

The end results might be the same, the immersion however is not broken.

Your immersion is different from my immersion and it doesn't break mine. This is a world of magic, to think that we could magically teleport somewhere doesn't break my immersion.

This plus it does't help the community if we have to sit around to 20 minutes while people travel cross country to get to the dungeon, only to get attacked, die, and have to heal up etc.

Also, nothing (outside of other players waiting on you) says you have to use it.

Tough. This is an entirely subjective thing and no matter where they draw the line, people are going to be unhappy with it, one way or another.

You are in a world that makes that possible. Let's go of your disbelief. There, feel better? :)

How does this break your immersion? People teleporting is okay so long as it is at a specific place or they happen to have a specfic spell? Why does that matter to you? You don't have to teleport if you don't want to, but some people don't want to spend half an hour of the gametime running to a dungeon to meet up with friends.

Well... if you look at it for what it is, an OOC long cast time Teleport it isn't that Lore or immersion breaking.

If it was an instant cast Psijic Archmage Teleport that sent you wherever you wanted, whether you had been there or not... with no cooldown... then yeah... that'd be insane.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I think the reverse is more important. Some people don't want to spend an half an hour of gametime waiting for others to join them at a dungeon.

I can appreciate some players not using fast travel mechanics for whatever reason floats their boat. No problem with that. But I don't much care for being left idle while someone like this drags their sorry [censored] slowly around the world.

It may not "break" immersion for some, but sure as hell will trivialize the size of the world. Take WoW and GW2 for example. When you looked at WoW's map and you had to,say, get from Silvermoon City to Tanaris, your thought process would probably be "wow.....that's kinda far". With GW2, the map may be huge, but it didnt feel large because you could teleport from one end to the other in under 5 seconds. I'm all for a fast travel system the likes of LOTRO or WoW, but this waypoint [censored] trivializes and reduces the impact world size has on the game and the players immersion.

don't use it then if you feel like it trivializes the game world.

I agree on that point. Eve is a good example of what can happen when you remove (apart from the clone jumping thing) teleportation from a game. In a fantasy land where I had enough money to make my dream MMO I'd probably exclude it.

But without it things like friends meeting up and getting groups together for eg. dungeons becomes much more difficult. Painful even, especially for players who may not have a huge amount of time to play.
