Terriable glitch in Skyrim :l

Post » Wed Jan 23, 2013 12:08 am

I've been told that what I'm experiencing is a loading error. It all happened when I finished my main quest months ago. I bought the game used maybe a week after Skyrim came out. First, all my books decided to be trolls and look like weird red rectangles with white exclamation points in them (http://i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq141/Sasukesgirl124/Mobile%20Uploads/1231121144.jpg please note they all vary in size..)
Being stupid, I started over. Now everything and I mean everything (Dragons, dragon fire, daggers, armor, etc.) is that damn thing
I tried clearing cache, deleting all my Skyrim stuff from my HDD (250GB I have about 150GB of space left on it), nothing. Please tell me there's a fix -_-
Oh, and I have no mods on my saves at all. And this might have nothing to do with it at all, but sometimes when I was fast traveling just like in Fallout, the game would freeze on the loading screens and would freeze while simply changing the gender of the character from male to female

NOTE:
lilbear's steps actually fixed my game. I'm gonna leave this thread as is in case anyone else has this awful problem I had. Have fun playing Skyrim everyone(:

Those "icons" are actually what happens when a graphic fails to load.
Are your BSA files present in your Data folder?

THe BSA files are where the graphic images and texrures tend to be stored.

He may think you have the PC version as you mention you had no mods, and everyone knows that it is impossible to mod your game if is the xbox version, but damn, that is the worst problem I have seen, maybe that disc is corrupt or who knows, I would recommend trying with a different one as I doubt the cache thing will work, I have never heard about that problem before.

If your game is installed to the hdd, remove it and everything associated with skyrim (including any dlc). Next, clear the system cache via the system settings. Turn off the Xbox and leave it off for at least a few minutes (this is not always necessary, but it guarantees that any remaining electrical/magnetic charges -- and, therefore, data bits -- left in any ram chips have cleared).

Power up your system and let the game load to the title screen and when given the option, download and install the current patch. Do NOT start a new game yet. Leave the game via the Dashboard, go to System Settings and install the game to the HDD. Stay glued to your tv screen while it installs. Did you get any error messages? Did it appear to install to 100%?

You said you bought your game used one week after Skyrim was released. I don't know about you, but as an informed consumer, that would've set off warning alarms in my brain. Even if a legitimate copy, I certainly would've been suspicious of a defective copy. Thus, let's make sure it'll install to 100%. If so, we'll go from there.

Sometimes I start a save and Alduin is that, or sometimes he'll actually be himself (a dragon not that thing)
Its odd. Started a new save, no signs, I get the dead guys armour, and all of a sudden all I see is red -_-

"Can't read the disc. It may be scratched or dirty. Clean the disc with a soft cloth and try again"
I'll go clean it and edit this post if something new comes up (It stopped 84% into installing)
EDIT:
Noticed something while cleaning it...Theres 3 faint circles in a triangle shape around the middle. Not a circle shape like the box decided to eat my game just a small circle...Like if you press your index finger on it, where my finger print is thats the size of it...Huh

Are they smudges, indentions, scratches? Topside/labelside or the shiny/reflective side? By middle do you mean where the small plastic ring is with the center hole or just somewhere close to that but out where the data is?

You can get that error message whether the problem is an actual dirty disc, scratched disc, or even a problem with the dvd drive. Your next troubleshooting step then, if possible, is to rule out the drive as the likely culprit:

Try to install another fairly large game to the hdd. In theory, if it made it to 84% with Skyrim, you want your "test" game to be at least 3gb (so the laser in the dvd drive has to pass at least as far as it did on Skyrim's disc).

shiny/reflective side..looks like a scratch and somewhere close to it. Its odd. But it did 100% install to my HDD after I went to try to reinstall again. I also installed a few days ago THAW and Dead Rising 2 to my HDD so it was obviously the disk. I have yet to make a new save though waiting for your "O.K" on that.

Well, I assume that other games are playing okay which means we can rule out a problem with the graphics unit. You said you had a problem with the graphics (i.e., iconic red triangles) even without installing to the hdd and running the game purely off the dvd, correct? Because if so, that pretty much just leaves the game disc.

Even though the disc managed to install after repeated attempts, that doesn't necessarily mean it installed without corrupted data. My guess is that the missing graphics (the ones being replaced by the icons) are stored on the area of the disc with the scratching.

I'd say give it a try with a new game and new saves and see what happens. I assume by now that you've already got saves from older, established characters backed up to a flash drive, so just leave those there. However, the bad news is that it is possible that those saves are already corrupted, but hopefully not.

No matter the result, given what you've experienced so far, I'd personally be in the market for purchasing a new copy of the game -- not shilling for Bethesda, just love playing Skyrim. :D

All the other games are fine its just their "xbox" ring (thing in the middle) is one of the older ones so its just some silvery foil like stuff XD But yea the problem was w/o the game being installed on the HDD. But I honestly wish I thought to put my save on a USB ._. I'll attempt to pick up a new copy of the game tomorrow if I still have the issue and see what will end up happening
Thanks for your help c:
