Terrible close range textures

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 1:52 pm

Hi all,

My RAGE has been running fine except for ONE torturturing annoyingly factor: my close range textures are DAMN ugly. And I mean Duke Nukem 3D ugly.

Here's some screens I made:

As you can see they lack a lot of detail, and they're very square-ish. Especially the first pic compares a normally rendered character to the fugly background textures. As a result indoor walls and such usually look terrible, very strange because the long-ranged textures seem to be very detailed and I have experienced no (texture) problems other than this.I mean, in this game you can't even read what a canister of food says, you can hardly make out it's a canister at all. Screenshots are taken full resolution as well.

The game runs a constant 60fps, no major issues other than this, but these textures are putting me off. Is this normal? Or is my PC not loading them properly?

Anyone else have this problem? How can I fix it / can I fix it at all or am I supposed to accept this quality? (is this intended or a bug/graphics problem?)

Specs:
NVidia GTX 560Ti (latest beta drivers) / 1GB vid. memory
Intel i5 2500K
8 GB RAM
W7 x64

Game settings maxed (large textures or forced 8MB), with or without config file...doesn't matter. Still ugly as hell.

Thanks!

Yeah I read about them possibly releasing such a 'super' texture pack, but lol if this are supposed to be the 'normal' textures then the super textures would be comparable to, say, any decent game? I mean right now they are really horrendous and imo is unacceptable...looks nothing like the trailers and it really feels as if playing some 2002 game on PS2 when you look at those textures. Also caused my confusion whether it was intended or not because the rest of the game looks nice so these [censored] textures feel very out of place.

This appears to be unfortunately normal/as planned.

There's no high res solution/art for a lot of the environment/props. Presumably it all comes out of the same pool as much of the environment.

Presumably enough work goes into running the environment at large. And either replacing/adding in detail textures would require another streaming requirement let alone management of new larger textures... And that's presuming you even found a solution to transition the map resolutions nicely...

Either that or you're going to be simply trying to load some absolutely massive textures all over... [I'd suspect a lot of the props are grouped together so you could end up loading a massive texture just to use a piece of it for a single prop].

On pc the resolution difference between 'hero' props [like weapons] and characters compared to normal background props is jarring.

I would hasten to add this isn't a compression issue but a source texture resolution and [probably tied to] texture management issue - and I don't believe the higher resolution assets exist in the 'wild' - there seems to be no benefit to upping page files.

Right now we have 8k max texture size on the PC . On top of that there is no additional mip levels that are there , for really close range stuff. If there is a higher rez texture pack coming then be patient, and enjoy what we have for now. It still looks quite fantastic!

John Carmack said in his keynote at quakecon, that regrettably, at release, the PC version of rage would ship with the same texture packs as those for the Xbox and Playstation. Textures had to be toned down for those platforms because of limitations in texture memory space etc. He said that hopefully, they would have time to release a hi-res texture pack for PC users after the game released. Here's to hoping it happens...

Not being cynical but what exactly looks fantastic? Yes, the NPC's/Hero & Vehicles look awesome. But really, anything beyond that is like, a toss up between Swat 3/Duke 3D/System Shock 2 level of textures and the lighting system of HL 1 at best. Which kills me to even acknowledge that sort of thing considering what Doom 3/Quake 4 had for a texture & lighting setup.

Its really depressing. I can't even play it myself. I'm very patiently waiting to see if Carmack/Id decide to make up for this atrocity of a mess.
