TESO accounts and authenticators

One of the reasons that Matt Firor gave for the monthly subscription fee in the Gamestar interview is that the game will be "one that will be supported with premium customer support." That makes perfect sense. F2P games often have uneven customer support even with transactions involving real money.

Account security is arguably part of premium customer support. Is safe to assume that we will have standalone authenticators for TESO like that other MMO with arguably the most premium MMO customer support? Yes, that other MMO is World of Warcraft.

FF14 is also using mobile and keychain authenticators, i wouldnt be surprised if they followed suit, they have been a big help with hackers. Im just hoping they dont do the email system like GW 2 .

Yep, authenticators whether they be the physical key fob type or the smart phone app, are pretty much a standard feature now.

I love my blizzard authenticator, it's a good solution for people with little to no Internet savvy. I had several account hacks on world of Warcraft before I finally realized password was a terrible password. And after I learned that I already had authenticator protection .

Swtor has a cool authenticator that works and it looks cool as well. it would be nice to get one with a theme based on a chosen faction.

Honestly, I'd rather they practiced good security on their end--Turbine Games (Asheron's Call, LotRO, DDO) keeps track of where your IP is registered to, and when someone tries to access your account (whether or account page or logging in to one of their games) from outside that area, they put a temporary freeze on your account and contact you to make sure that your account wasn't compromised. The authenticators have always felt (to me) like an additional charge for the security they should be providing as part of the standard customer service experience.

Granted, nothing stops a weak password from being weak, but I spent 4 years working in a secure facility for the USAF, so I know and practice good account security on my end.

Protip: If you're a football fan from Denver GoBroncos123 is not a good password.

I wonder how much of the alleged hacking is not simply people giving out their pasword to scamers? and if so, how relevent authenticators really are since its only protecting people agianst themselves.

Never saw the guy that did it personally, but the guys that tested for weak passwords caught his account with that exact type of password three times in a row. After every test, his network account was locked, the password reset to something more secure, and he changed it right back to GoBroncos###. After the third time, they made his superior officer talk to them before they'd unlock it again. He finally learned the hard way.
