TESO will be a lot like Guilds Wars 2, they need to be more

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 7:04 pm

- you can combine abilities i.e. someone oils the ground, you set it on fire etc
- "dynamic events" (aka "phased questing" in TESO) meaning there is no hubs whereas you simply bump into stuff
- almost identical PvP formats , W v W v W , take and hold , crown the emperor (aka Hall of Heroes in Gw) etc.
- TESO aims to eliminate the "holy trinity" too
- skillbar fragmentation, i.e. first two slots on the skillbar are weapon abilities, remaining are changeable, one is an ultimate/elite skill etc.

TESO has more in common with GW2 than with any other MMO. And dont bite me head off for saying this but it sounds more like a GW2 clone rather than a Wow-clone even.

I agree and add in Neverwinter Online while your at it. It could actually be a very enjoyable game but time will tell.

Meh i would say much more like Daoc, the pvp is nothing like GW, the only real thing in common is combat and we don't even know that yet, most things you mentioned have been in a few mmorpgs before Gw2.

At lot of that is in Skyrim. Like no one place you go to for every quest. And you can set oil on fire in Skyrim.

They started development around the same time, GW2 simply announced its features earlier.

I highly doubt they ripped off such core elements and completely scrapped what hey had once ArenaNet announced their plans.

The new co-op game that's in the works? What about it?

Are you referring to an upcoming game or the Neverwinter MMO on AOL from like 1992? If the latter, kudos for even knowing about that!

I rather have a GW2 clone than a WoW clone. Though I would prefer it to be more original.

GW2 is much closer to WoW than TES, that's for sure.

It is no longer a co-op game but a full mmo. The use of skills reminds me of what TESO seems to be aiming for though I need more info for both to understand just how much they share but they do sound similar.

That's not really fair. They started devolpment on this before GW2 (IIRC), they ArenaNet just announced it first. They can't predict the future; the fact that ANet is doing something similar is just bad luck.

I doubt they were going to scrap core features just because another game happened to have them. Both GW2 and ESO began dev around the same time.

Or natural evolution of the genre. I think more and more companies were going to stray towards open form questing, incrementally more active combat, and limited skill sets even if neither of these games did.

I still prefer that it's GW2 clone than WoW clone.
Still, if they plan to release the game in 2013, they can delay that a bit in favor of making game's combat action oriented as much as possible (something like Tera).
Also, they should change their art style to more traditional medieval style as seen in TES.
Why they didn't go with more traditional medieval style from the beginning is simply beyond me!

About holy trinity; while I do agree that that concept is outdated, I still think that it shouldn't be totally removed.
It should be more like that you can adventure/fight/whatever without a DPS/tank/supporter, but having one would still help.
So basically what I'm trying to say is that, for example, a team of 3 warriors should be able to do fine on their own, but a team of a warrior, mage and thief should do better - each class shouldn't be dedicated to the max at what it does, but it should be better at it than other classes.

Thats the breaks! Since it comes out after Guild Wars 2 people will compare it primarily to that game. If Guild Wars does what TES Online does better oh well. Thats the breaks

Yeah I guess. Both ZOS and ANet have former DAoC devs in their ranks, so looking at all the similarities I reckon they were ripping each other off over the years. And Gw2 has had a much better marketing campaign and started earlier.

I'd much prefer the game to be a "GW2 Clone" than a "WoW Clone." That being said, this game has been in development around as long as GW2 has, so even this comparison is a bit unfair. Regardless of the similarities between the two projects, this game is showing a lot of potential, especially in regards to the dynamism of combat (instead of your static rotation skill set such as WoW and SWTOR) and the constantly-changing pvp landscape that will likely ensue with vibrant player-driven politics.

Also your dynamic event comparison would be better placed with the dark anchors that will be in the game, similar also to rifts in Rift. Phased questing would be more in lines with how SWTOR would place players into their own personal instances for story. I digress however, from what little we know this game is already sounding very promising. I look forward to hopefully hearing more details from the Game Informer cover as well as more explanation at E3.

if they do stamina how i think it's going to be based on the little info they've released than i think the combat will be awesome and more skill based than people assume right now. of course, i might be interpreting it wrongly, but I think the stamina bar and usage is going to set this game apart from others.
