Text Chatting!

Post » Wed Jun 26, 2013 1:40 pm

*Sorry if this has been discussed or answered before, I am fairly new to the forums.

So according to what I know, there are going to be individual Megaservers for each platform which is a good thing (PC gamers and Console gamers have different game styles and they should not be placed in the same spot).

So my Question is! how is Text Chatting going to work for Xbox and PS players? they don’t use keyboards which makes text chatting impossible for them (unless they use the Voice/Kinect devises to “Say” the words and convert them to text, which is kind of annoying!).

However they could use Voice chat! (which could also be annoying because nobody likes to hear random immature people talking! And not to mention that “Item linking” and other text chat related actions will be impossible!)?

Another question that I have is! How is there going to be a Text chat window?
According to what I have seen from Bethesda games, Exploration and “Seeing” everything is very important! which is why the UI doesn’t take much space, for example in Skyrim the health bar would disappear/hide after the player reached full health! (same thing with other UI’s) which is a good thing because the player could have more screen space for seeing the astonishing graphics and views easier! Soooo.... how is Bethesda/Zenamax going to place a chat window that takes 1/5th-1/7th of the screen space in the UI?

ESO has the same minimalist UI as Skyrim, and most modern MMOs don't really keep the chat window open unless you press enter, http://images.vg247.com/current//2012/09/gw024-600x337.jpg And of course, there's always toggles for people who do like having their UI always displaying.

As for the first question regarding text on consoles, I'm pretty sure that's been discussed in a number of threads. I'm not sure what the general consensus was, though. We'll just have to wait for console betas.

For text chatting on consoles you'll likely have two options. Use a USB keyboard to plug in and use chat or there may be a pop-up keyboard on screen you can use to text chat.

From what I have seen of Text Entering schemes on consoles using controllers, chat would work much better if there was a key board to enter the text.

That will be a problem and it really remains to be seen how they will deal with it. Most likely ESO will have built in voice chat software, however that makes RP pretty much hopeless unless everyone wants to stick to their proper gender and even then it makes for some absolutely abysmal voice acting in the chat channels... :yuck:

Either you have to svck it up using the virtual keyboard or spent £10 or your region equivalent on a USB keyboard. The PS4 utilizes the touchpad on the controller for the virtual keyboard so it'll be a lot easier than it was on the PS3, they did tease how that looks and works in a PS4 trailer, it should be up on the E3 website if you're interested.

For consoles they could utilize the ubiquitous headsets as not voice comms, but voice recognition. The voice recognition on my phone for sending a text message is flawless and they could license a 3rd-party system like Dragon so you press a button and start talking and your voice turns to text and then you press the button again to confirm the message in chat. Something like that COULD work if implemented well. Otherwise, it will be a tough prospect to have chat in a console MMO.

For anyone who has played, say DCUO on console, how is it done there?
