Text size in recent video games

Post » Tue Nov 13, 2012 10:52 pm

This has been bugging me for awhile. It seems like developers are making text size smaller and smaller in games these days. If I am more than 8-10+ feet from the TV(34inch TV, if it was a smaller TV I would imagine it would be much worse) I cannot read the text! I never remember this being a problem in the past. It feels like devs assume people either play very close to the screen(understandable for PC players) or have very big TVs.

Anyone else notice this lr bothered by this trend? Is it even a trend or am I just playing games that have very small text in them? I am talking about stuff from subtitles to in game books/databases that you read to acquire information about the game world. Even item and ability descriptions.

It annoys the crap out of me. I enjoy reading the tidbits that devs put into games. But it is kind of tedious to do so when the text is so small. Or maybe i am slowly going blind and haven't noticed it. Meh. /mildrantabouttrivialfirstworldproblemcrap

Yeah, I've noticed this too. It's ten times worse on CRTVs. :P

Woo...at least I am not the only one.

Cameroon Radio Televisions? Cathode Ray Televisions? I am actually not familiar with that terminology but hopefully google cleared that up. :P
Pretty sure you didn't mean the other CRTV...
Spoiler
Center for Rehabilitation of Torture Victims... O-o

I meant Cathode Ray, haha. The old ones with the curved screens. I set up my 360 at my grandmas place when we stayed there for a few weeks and playing Skyrim was hell. I could never read anything. It wasn't a small TV either.

I have a nice big flat screen myself, and though it's easier, it's still pretty small. I usually sit close to the TV anyway though, so it's not that big a deal.

Ahhh yeah. Those 'old' ones ehh? Grew up with them lol. Tried playing Dragon's Dogma on one not to long ago. They are hell to read small text on. But even my 34 inch flatscreen is giving me irritation when trying to read Assasins Creed III's animus data and such. <_<

Text sizes have been too big since the age of console ports, IMO.

Don't agree. I played many older PC-only games and I don't remember the text appearing very small nor the text being too big in more recent titles in comparison. Seems similar.

Yeah, I've noticed this. I hate it too. I have to stand right in front of the tv sometimes so I can read it.

Infinite Undiscovery is notorious for its small ass text. Good lord, I needed a microscope.
