Is this the level of problems everyone is experiencing? I have changed settings in the game and through Nvidia control panel with no change to the graphics really. I had slightly better graphics with the newest non-beta driver from Nvidia, but just upgraded to the most recent beta and things look like that now. Even before the update though, things looked bad except for character models.

Figure I should be getting great graphics, but from the state of the boards maybe I am in the same boat as most people with problems.

g_showplayershadow 1 -> essential, not sure if it actually worked
image_anisotropy 16 -> essential!
image_usecompression 0 -> higher quality images, same as Ultra setting in DOOM 3. Not sure if it did anything.
r_forceaspectratio -> not needed as the resolution change does it.

pm_nobob -> turns off head bob and weapon sway

m_smooth 0 -> disables mouse smoothing

m_menu_sensitivity (locked) -> mouse acceleration in menu?
r_displayRefresh (locked) -> 120hz, 75hz, so on...
com_skipintrovideo (locked)

com_showfps -> what can your rig do?
+set com_allowconsole 1 in the launch options u can try this

Try this link for a fix: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2156408

HOPE THIS HELPS. It doesn't seem like it's a fail on id's part (completely), the more you research it in MY personal opinion, it's that one of two things happened, either id COMPLETELY underestimated the type of hardware that most people are using (which would make sense since on the nvidia side they "recommend" a 9800 WTF) or, they were so enthralled with the console domination that they totally forgot the tweak it more properly for the PC ... I feel the underestimate is more logical.. but go figure.

The game is less bad when you start to look VERY close at these types of issues - still disappointed, but my hype level for rage was expecting a 20 out of 10, I don't think anything could have possibly lived up to [our] expectations.

Edit:
You could also try turning down the resolution to 1680x1050, and even disabling AA completely. GL, I have lots to try when I get home.. another hour or so >.<

Again, the more research I've done the more turning UP the settings makes things WORSE - I know it doesn't make any sense, but think of it like cooking a hamburger on the open fire - sure it will appear to cook faster, but all you're going to do is burn the outside, and still have a raw middle. Look a little more into the forums, AA seems like it might actually be a bad thing when turned up to 16, .. check my link above, those arguments really make much more sense.. there is also a link to an nvidia test in there somewhere... good info - again, looks like a fail in the sense that they thought people would still be using DX9 cards or something.
