Texture streaming and other smaller issues.

First of all i have to say that this game is amazing. I already finished it, I enjoyed it a lot and still am. It's a pity that so many people are having trouble running it and have to resort to cfg's with so many useless cvars.

I've been having some minor issues tho. Before the patch i was running it perfectly with the identical settings ( rageconfig.cfg ) recommended by nvidia and the latest drivers. Gpu transcoding On and 16x AA in game.
My specs are:
i7 2600k @ 4200Mhz
Gtx 580 factory overclocked 1536Mb
16Gb DDR3
Sata 3 SSD

After the patch i removed the cfg and max settings in game with 16x AA is giving me quite bad texture popping all over the screen. Turning down the AA to 8x does get rid of most of the problem but i still get some popping around the edges of the screen when i turn around really fast. It's ok but still bugging.
I added the cfg again with just these lines:
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 16384
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly 16384
vt_pageimagesizeunique 16384
vt_pageimagesizevmtr 8192
vt_restart
The texture popping is entirely fixed but there is no difference in texture quality ( it looks identical with the max settings without cfg ). In the settings menu the game shows the cache on Low. So my guess is there's still something messed up with the amount of cache allocated. I'm also pretty sure that the game can run much faster than 60 fps, that would be actually pretty nice as I'm playing on a 120hz monitor and i think i have the juice to get to that number.
Also the in game settings can't seem to remember the brightness value. i have to always change it. Also Vsync doesn't work, it always reverts to off although it seems like it's on.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of the problems this game has on PC are because a lot of settings were hard coded to work well on consoles. The game is really good but all these problems don't make it look as good ( is that some new marketing strategy ?!? ) . Please fix it and for the love of god add some competitive 1st person multiplayer :D

I believe all you've done here in the cfg is to increase the texture paging sizes, or at least attemtping to ... I'm not sure you'll see benefit over 8192... and I would have thought that these 4 numbers should all match otherwise I'd guess your maybe causing some mismatch/wasted effort here.

To improve/decrease pop in you need to speed up the texture load ins... you've got a good amount of system ram but you still need to process and swap in/out textures. I would suggest trying 8192, lowering some of the aliasing/anistropy settings, using some compression [if not using any]. And basically checking out anything on http://donotargue.com/cfg-makers/rage/ to try and tweak that quality/performance balance.

It might be something like just lowering the anisotropy settings or using a bit of compression that speeds it up a smidge you need.

Don't just replace you're cfg wholesale. Just replace a couple of chunks or even single lines at a time. Maybe even start at something low [just to make sure it can be done and its not a bug] and then up it from there.

Thanks for your reply.
That's basically what i did, increased the page size and that fixed the pop without affecting the visual quality in any way. I actually did some testing with that.
1. Max settings in game without cfg => some pop in on the edges.
2. Cfg with just the page sizes changed => completely fixes the pop. A really subtle blur on the textures.
3. Made a cfg with donotargue.com which is using the 8k settings for the pages => quite visible increase in quality, it's not using compression any more + some other filtering and loding setting, but i'm getting the popping again.
4 Modified the new cfg with the 16k settings => again fixed the popping and getting even better sharper quality.

There is no reason for me to try and tweak quality/performance. The game runs silky smooth with whatever settings or cfg's i throw at it. I just find it hard to understand why apparently increasing a quality setting ( the page size ) fixes the popping issue.

About having the page numbers match... as far as i know vt_pageimagesizevmtr is for menus icons and other UI stuff, besides if i set this to 16384 the game is crashing after it loads the level. As for the other ones... as i said, i only changed them because it fixes the texture popping ( nothing else works, turning down the AA, putting the texture cache on Small, i still get the popping on the edges ). Although the 16384 also makes the game look a bit more crisp with the new cfg. If i understand correctly that config removes the compression and forces the engine to use the best mipmaps available. But it also enhances the reflections and specular quite a bit, and the bump is more pronounced. Why can't we just have these settings in game ?

bump ..??

anyone ??

I find it hard to believe there are no officials from Id or Bethesda helping out the community, which btw fixed their game.
