Texturing Program

Does anyone know a good texturing program? I'm currently using Mapzone for creating textures and it hasn't been updated since 07.

What are you creating textures for exactly? Seen people use varying programs with GIMP having great capabilities. Would recommend photoshop, but that is a very expensive program to use if you're just doing this as a hobby. Cost me $700 for CS2 then just recently was lucky enough to upgrade, but it cost me $175 so that's $875 investment.

Would definitely give GIMP a try since it can do a good chunk of work that photoshop can, but lacks more advanced tools from what i've heard.

Photoshop is the most popular choice for texture artists, although many of them prefer to create hand-drawn textures in programs such as Painter or ArtRage.

I use Photoshop + CrazyBump for my texturing needs but I'm starting to use ArtRage a lot too since I'm trying to improve my drawings and paintings. :)

I do all my texturing work in paint.net. Not as feature rich as photoshop or gimp but it's a hell of a lot easier to work with.

The biggest problem with photoshop is if you are unfamiliar with it you will be overwhelmed really quickly. Was using Paint Shop Pro for the longest time until I actually sat down and started working with photoshop. Even though i've been working with it for 2 to 3 years now i'm still only using 1/4 of the stuff. Only started to use mask layers and just recently started using clipping masks to make things easier for me.

Hardest thing is when you go into HD textures which can have their own complexities. Still remember looking at that tutorial for special dynamic lighting on texture metal surfaces which had those + shape head screws.
