Yeah I'm in the same boat - but for me it is Imperial Legion armor. In my opinion, that is the best looking armor in the game. It looks functional, but ornate.

And most other armors on an imperial legion Legate looks kind of dumb...

The thing I like about the lower tier armors is that you've got a variety of appearances to choose from. At higher levels, you've just got one appearance and it's it. Plus, the high levels lack the Nordic flavor the lower ones have.

I wish there was a Nord Hero armor, but all you get is the Ancient Nord Armor that the draugr wear. A shiny retexture and stat boost (like the Nord Hero weaponry) would've been nice.

For the past week or so I've been playing an Orc warrior character and having a great time with it. I've done the companion quests, a little bit of the main quest and a lot of adventuring, smithing, brawling at orc strongholds and inns, etc. One thing I noticed about myself as I'm getting higher in levels (35 at the moment) is my favor of the lower level heavy armors over the higher levels I now have easier access to. I've been through a set of basic iron armor, three sets of steel armor (each improved greatly over the other), and just went back to smithing another new banded iron set. I have plans to make Nord Hero armor, but beyond that, the other armors just don't appeal to me. Not even the Orc armor (I have a full set) interests me. I feel like the other armors are too fancy and advanced looking and make my character stick out like a sore thumb, and I lose that "adventurer" feel.

I've also been sticking to steel weapons, and improving them frequently, and currently don't have any intention of switching to higher level weapons. When it comes down to it, I guess it doesn't matter because with the right enchantment and smithing abilities, any weapon or armor can be good. I was wondering if anyone else is like me, and just generally prefers the overall aesthetic and "adventurer" feel of the simpler armor types. I know I'm not the only one. This also applies to light armors. I'm about to start a new character that only uses fur, for the same reasons.

On a side note - I wish the higher level armors had different variations kind of like lower level armors do. I wonder the reason for why they don't. Different variants keep it interesting IMO. If there was a style of ebony armor that looked a bit more functional and outdoorsy (Like, i've been in and out of several dungeons slaughtering giant spiders and the undead all day) I'd probably use it. Anyone else feel the same?

Btw, I'm on xbox, so no mod options.
It almost seems like the majority of players prefer the lower level armors. I'm in that camp. They look more functional and slightly worn. The higher level sets look too neat and ornamental. Too bad they don't have some high level variants that look a bit more functional.

Totally agree  !! Love the iron and ancient nord stuff! It just looks so ruff'n'ready, as one NPC says about Banded Iron armor "the armor of a mercenary :tops: !"

I play a Nord Barbarian and I only rock what I call Barbaric armors. I wore Fur till 18, then switched to Stormcloak General armor (love the Jawbone piece on it), now I'm in scale but I will not wear Elven nor Glass as it does not match my Barbaric asthetic.

My level 52 Warrior is still wearing Hide Armor. It's what he prefers.

I agree so much. The low lvl armors are way better than most so I am often forced to smith to make them fairly good (so I don't die in one blow). I really want more highlvl armors to be more mercenary looking and adventure-ish (not megauberlord like deadric and glass). I also like to mix armor sets, but they have created a dumb perk that makes you get armor bonus if you have a full set equiped (it destroys originality in my opinion even though i don't have to use that perk). They should really try do something about this

See to me it's not that the low level armor's look better it's just the high level armor is out of place and is immersion breaking.

The low level armors are just better looking. I bet my character sticks with Legion armor for quite a while. Until i find fitting modded armor for her. There aren't many good looking light armors in the top tiers.

I'm exactly like you in that regard. My Nord warrior will never wear a heavy armor, and never anything other than fur/leather/studded armors. I love the rugged Nord feel, and Dwarven, Glass, Ebony, Dragon and Daedric is just too high fantasy for my taste.

This is my dude in hishttp://i40.tinypic.com/r92yz4.jpg When it snows and I'm further up north I wear furs and leather instead. I'm fortunate to have access to mods, and there are tons of really sweet lore friendly light armors.

I like the look of most of the armor sets in Skyrim. I completely get what you mean though, and I go for role play over stats when making my choice, so I often end up with lower level gear.

Having said that, my Dunmer battlemage does look sweet in full Ebony (I really liked the look of the ebony armor by the way).

I have to agree and this is one of the reason I don't mind the game being "unbalanced" or "easy" as some people call it. In past games, for my warrior characters I have always just worn the best armor available then never gone back to the lower level armor mainly because I couldn't. In Skryim I can beef up the lower level armor to a usable level and use many different types.

I just adjust the difficulty to match my armor rating. If I die all the time, I lower it so I can wear the armor that suits my taste.

I hate the way Bethesda created Skyrim, where there are almost no limitations(in terms of class skills, etc.). Sure it means that you can enjoy the game with the character that you really love, without worrying about starting stats and such, but because of how limitless the game is, it's so incredibly easy to break the game and destroy everything on the screen.

Its called choice. If you break the game its because you chose to break the game. You can just as easily not break the game. Don't blame bethesda for the choices you make.

I tend to go by theme also. My Dunmer will wear Glass, as it is something of a cultural armor for them, in battles they have time to prepare for and special occasions. Otherwise, it will be either clothes or leathers of some kind.

Orcs tend to smith their own armor, so any orcs I make will wear Orcish. High Elves wll wear the obvious. Nords will wear Skyforge Steel. Ect, ect. Mages get robes. Imperial aligned characters will wear Imperial armor.

Dragonbone and Scale I actually feel does look pretty much like what an adventurer would wear, especiallyas Dovahkiin. Though its very Nordish, so the more refined/snobish characters likely wouldn't.

I'm the same way. I generally don't like the upper tiered armors. About the highest one I'll use is the scaled armor set. I find it to be a beautiful and functional set that's not overly elaborate or gaudy like the upper tiered armors are.

Thanks for the good responses guys, it's cool to hear how you all play. Most of these posts match my feelings almost exactly when it comes to my particular play style.

As you said, you don't have to take the perk and to be honest it makes sense. A full suit or armor is going to give better protection than a mismatched set of different styles/materials. Isn't there also a perk that gives a bonus for wearing all heavy (not a matched set)? I don't recall without actually looking at the perk trees.

Helmets are an issue in this game, I feel. There are a few good ones, but more ugly ones. I mentioned previously that I like the scaled armor set, but I do not wear the helmet that goes with it. That thing is ugly.
