I'll tell you what it means...

...it means Zenimax has no clue what they're doing.

they want 100vs100 battles. I would rather have smaller battles if it meant retaining tes combat

It means it will be similar tab targetting to other MMOs - they do say that they have added a lot of fluidity to the combat though - I don't think there is any auto attack, and you can block, sprint, build up chains with your own skills or allies, use endo to break CC or not.. strategically saving or spending it.. etc. Sounds like if you are good at it, you'll crush people and if you stand around clicking your skills you are gonna have a hard day.

What it means is we don't [censored] know what it [censored] means! Try not nerdraging over assumptions. Even if its not what you want, something that integral is not getting changed at this point, so buck up and take it or wait for the next single-player TES game.

Oh I'm sorry I assumed this was a forum where you can post your opinions.

Either way non-real time combat reeks of turn-based and that is not the way to go if you're building a MMO which is guaranteed to have at least tens of thousands of people playing it, giant chess match...

Actually I don't think there was a easy way to do a first person style fighting with a huge number of players.
Mortal online and Darfall did that ....
Actually .. Darkfall was horrible IMHO, Mortal was kinda good as Ideas but kinda bad as execution...
Is not impossible to pull off... but .. well .. is not easy at all...
So they go for a different kind of combat system.
This could actually be good, it's not the combat system what I'm worried about

Perhaps I was a bit harsh, but your OP didn't come of as any sort of constructive discussion point.

I think you misinterpret "real-time". By real-time, they probably mean the visceral, responsive combat in the Elder Scrolls games. "Non real-time" will be, for lack of a better term, button-mashing.

It means Zenimax hsa no faith in the actual TES GAMEPLAY and style, and instead of actually TRYING to do something true to TES or "new" to the mmo genre (well not really, there are some mmo's that do decent real-time action oriented combat, look at the recent Tera, or Vindictius, or mortal online, or Darkfall, all real-time action oriented mmo's that have fine combat in them) they instead are just going to do what virtually ALL suits behind games do, chase WoW.

Just like that worked out for Star Trek Online, take a famous IP, take the generic EQ formula (Claass focus, theme park world, hotkey based combat) and then slap the famous IP's Skin on it (lore/world/graphics). The actual gameplay though will be nothing like TES from reading about the magazine info.

I just don't get their reasoning. "Due to latency"? Every other MMO I know of has real-time, non turn-based combat. Is Zenimax just too cheap to pay for the good speeds?

Almost every MMO has turn-based combat. It just isn't blatant.

What definition are we looking at?

Turn based as in Pokemon style? Or turn based as in you have abilities?

When I hear turnbased, I think of Pokemon style combat. Sorry.

Turn-based as in 'player 1 does *action*', 'player 2 does *action*', etc. Many many RPGs (even offline single-player ones) follow this formula because it was easy to bring over from the D&D pen-and-paper days.

RPGs will try hide their turn-based nature, by making actions automatic and using timers instead of strict round-table patterns, but there aren't many that truly go for TES-style real-time combat.

I'm pretty sure that most current MMOs use real-time combat as the player is directly controlling when to attack/buttom mash

I'm kind of upset that they didn't really try to innovate. Instead they use the same formula as WOW.

The attack doesn't happen right away, it waits until "your turn", so to speak. The system would calculate hits and damage before you actually see them, for instance.

Do want. This sounds amazing.

Funny, you adhere to the past and criticize Skyrim's shortcomings, yet WORSHIP the MMO the second thety announce that they are removing the very core of TES' combat system.

I don't think you really like this series.
