The Comic Look.... Again?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 6:36 am

Hey there,

I had so much hope for this MMORPG. So much :(
Most of the fans of The Elder Scrolls may be now between 20 and 30 years old.
We don't want to see this comic look again.
We had it in almost EVERY other MMORPG there is.

So why don't you stick to Elder Scrolls roots and make it a dark place. Like Skyrim is. Like Morrowind is.

I hope I am not the only one thinking this

I hear you brother. I'm sick of cartoony MMOs. '
WoW had it, SWTOR had it, TESo doesn't need it. From what I've seen, even RuneScape looks better. I really liked that game when I still played it, but not anymore.
I really don't like such fantastical artwork, there's a reason I use none of those "sixy armour" or "make-up" mods for my games.

Wait... are you kidding me? Is it really gonna be lookin' cartoonish? If it is, for the love of Talos, Zenimax, blow up your development team now, or scrap the entire art team and rework everything. We're looking for the nitty-gritty, hard-hitting, heavy atmosphere experience that we love of TES. Please do not stain the awesomeness of the Elder Scrolls. >.<

Cartoony seems to be the MMO style now adays.
But it can be done properly and we've only seen a few screenshots so far.
Maybe they manage to pull it off.

I didn't think the leaked shots looked cartoony. I thought the armor looked nicely detailed and nobody had strange proportions or anything. This one shot showed a female pretty close up to her face and she had nice, pretty features (not like all the ugly charactes in Skyrim.) Not sure what you guys mean by cartoony. It sure as heck didn't look like goofy WOW characters... More like Rift or EQ2 (but not as plastic-like as EQ2.)

There's a pragmatic reason for choosing a cartoony vibe. If you can get an MMO to be less system intensive and run on more systems, more people can play it. And more people playing an MMO is kind of the whole point.

Maybe it will scale well. LOTRO scaled really well for all sorts of hardware. So did Rift. I'm curious to see more screen shots and actually see the game.

Honestly, I thought the style was quite charming. I like Skyrim's design too, mind you, but the one featured in TESO look quite nice. And it's good that the graphics won't be too taxing on lower-end PCs.

As for the armour - I do hope there will be more modest sets of armour for female characters in-game. I'm not a fan of cleavage armour myself. I can't imagine all the armour in the game being sixualised for women, though.

The female mage's waist was Barbie small, too small for her bone structure, and her arm length/hands were also proportionally 'off', similar to WoW's elven women.

To be fair though, there is another year before release and they may tweak these textures and proportions later.

Let's be fair and also note that things often look different in motion than in a SS. Let's wait and see!

They have the ability to go in and pose and position the characters, so this is they way they wanted it to be presented as well.

Age of Conan has a style that matches TES much better. Even if outdated by today's standards, it reminds me more of Morrowind, Cyrodill and Skyrim than the Old Republic/WoW colorful vibe from the screenshots.

Well, it's better, but not what I would like for TES really.
We should have it like Minecraft.

It's the Hero Engine so expect the lip-sync to be off, the animations to be jerky, and the epic "fights" in the game to consist of enemies twirling their arms around like a madman while their hands glitch into the weapons they are suppose to be holding.

I think they are going to be cartoonish, but as I take it from my fellow users, not everyone is thinking this way
But maybe you should take a look at the screen shots and make yourself an opinion

I don't think thats true anymore. A LOT of people bought Skyrim, so that means that each and everyone of them should have been able to play/enjoy it.
So why not take a similar engine for the MMO and not the same engine that SWTOR uses.

That's exactly what I was hoping for in the TES mmo

And that is why i quit SWTOR. I just don't want the Hero Engine to ruin my playing expirience.

I don't mind a game's graphics at all, cartoonish or not. What I care about are the mechanics of it.

When I see the game I cannot stop thinking about cartoonish-RPG's and their mechanics (which svcks).

Zenimax, you have one year. If you don't want your offices torched by angry fans, I seriously urge you to redefine the mechanics to exclude hotkeys and all that crap and make it more like Oblivion - Morrowind - Skyrim like, but tuned to seamessly support online play, balancing stuff (since the games are way too single-playered engineered) and whatelse

Best regards,

-A TES fan

That because Cartoony runs on most every laptop made from 1990 up. More [censored] laptops it can run on, more subscriptions. MMOs are made for subscriptions.

Cartoony graphics justify a lower poly count which also increases performance. That being said, I didn't think the graphics were cartoony but the colours were much more vibrant or saturated than any of the past elderscrolls games.

In my opinion, in a game everything should fit together. And the current cartoonish style just doesn't fit the TES I am used to since I played Daggerfall

Skyrim sold over 10 Million copies. That means there are 10 Million gamers out there with the hardware to play it. That's as much people as WoW has right now.
Your argument is the same Blizzard uses for WoW, but I think its outdated.

True, but since perfection is not an option due to human stupidity, what would you sacrifice? Graphics or Mechanics?

Does that 10 Million include consoles? I'm pretty sure the console version (360) sold gobs more than the PC version did. I won both so it got a sale twice from me.

I would Sacrifice the MMO portion honestly....

Yeah I'm not very sure about that either. But then take a look at Age of Conan. Good look. Good Mechanics. Perfect engine for TES:O (just as an example, maybe there are more)

I would sacrifice none of them. I think it's just a pity that they have choosen the Hero Engine. But now they have to stick with it. So maybe they could tweak the colors to less saturation or something like that.
My intention with this thread was to give the developers a feedback on what I have seen so far: "Lower the saturation. Make the player models more realistic (Skyrim like, no one looks like this female mage, that's just ridiculous)".
