Does not compute.

What wireless standards do you need it to support? That can make a significant difference in price.

Indeed

Even if the router doesn't support N, it seems silly to get an adapter that doesn't. Otherwise you're just reducing the long-term life of the card.

The only real question IMO is whether you want to bother getting something with 5GHz support. Doubtful that anyone's router supports that and isn't explicitly aware of it. I'm still not fully sold on the usefulness of the 5GHz range due to penetration limitations. Though I guess in apartments 5 GHz makes more sense.

I have a dual band router that has 2.4GHz and 5GHz. N I suppose would be the best? This is why i'm asking you guys for suggestions.

I just don't want to run an ethernet cable because I have animals in the house.

I agree. I was thinking more along the lines of 802.11ac, but you can also get decent b/g adapters dirt cheap now with good b/g/n adapters being a bit more if you want to get one that's good enough to actually make good use of 802.11n. Depends on how restricted your budget is.

I can get the model number of my router if that helps you guys out.

A month ago, my computer started having problem, I diagnosed it to be bad sector. Ran scandisk, worked fine for a month. For a month.

This morning, computer started having problem, I diagnosed it to be bad sector, again. Running scandisk now. Typing this on the laptop. So what is the odd of bad sector plaguing my system twice in two months? Impending doom? End of the world? New HDD? New computer?

Seriously, is my HDD doomed? Would it help if I reinstall Windows (so that it won't use the bad sectors)?

Edit/Update: I remember last time, scandisk only found 2 bad sectors, just now the report for C: shows 6 more. zzz

You could run a hard drive maintenance program like Spinrite or HDD Regenerator (both are around $100). But once you detect a few, there's bound to be plenty more along the way.

I'd say get as much data as you can off of there (if you can't boot into Windows, a Linux distro such as Parted Magic would work to recover data). If the drive is within warranty the manufacturer may be able to replace it.

I have http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/4121/asus_radeon_hd_6870_directcu_ii_1gb_video_card_overclocked_review/index2.html in one of my computers that I want to hook up to my TV in the living room. Unfortunately it has no HDMI connector, just two DVI outputs. If I get a DVI to HDMI cable will I still get proper HD video?

The card has 2 DisplayPort connectors, it would make more sense to get a DP -> HDMI cable.

Doh, of course Seems like I'm restricted to a maximum 3 meter cable for it though, hopefully that shouldn't be a problem. I just want to play modded Oblivion on my sofa with a controller

Just check my warranty, it expired one month before the problem surfaces! This is a conspiracy!

Did you check the warranty of the actual hard drive or the entire system?

Howdy folks! The family is all looking to put in for a laptop for a younger relative's birthday. He wants a gaming laptop, capable of regular Minecraft as well as other, newer games - perhaps I'll convince him to try Skyrim

The current suggestion is a http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/computers/satellite/l850/pskg8a-05j001. How well will that run newer games, such as Tomb Raider?
I've also suggested the http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/qosmio/X870/X870-BT3G23, having seen it suggested here on the forum. Would that be a better, if slightly more expensive choice?

Thanks

Question, I bought a new pair of RAM, same brand/size/specs as my old pair (2GB PC3 - 10600 CL9 240-Pin DIMM). When I tried to install them, the computer won't boot up, apparently the two pairs don't like each other, or the motherboard doesn't support the new pair? Actually, what's puzzling is though the two pairs are of the same brand/specs, they are of different shape, the new pair are of the same length, but shorter in width. Is that a new version? Or was I given the wrong RAM (maybe for laptop, I don't know), when I specifically told the sales person I'm buying for PC.

laptop RAM sticks are shorter in length. At least the ones I've seen are.

The second one is far more powerful than the first (much better CPU and graphics card). It also has a higher resolution screen. They both appear to be roughly the same price, so I'd definitely go with the latter.

Here is a photo of my two old pair, and one of the new pair I just bought. Please help telling me what exactly did I bought.

Those both look like desktop modules. It's probably a new revision of the same modules. That happens a lot. Memory manufacturers will sometimes use different PCB, chips, etc. for different modules with the same model numbers. They typically will have a different revision number, but it's not always obvious. Sometimes more sensitive memory controllers (AMD's tend to be more sensitive than Intel's for some reason) don't like two different revisions of a module being used together for a variety of reasons.

This might not be your problem, however. Will the system boot with only the new modules installed? It's possible that one of the new modules is just bad. The first thing to do would be to try the modules in different combinations and see what works and what doesn't. To be safe I'd also try running some memory diagnostics like Memtest86+ before you decide that everything is working. Sometimes it can look like everything's ok, but without fully testing the memory configuration you can't be 100% sure.

I've tried running only one of the newer pair alone, and it won't boot up to BIOS as well. How do I run Mentest on these two RAMs if the computer won't boot BIOS when either or both are inserted into the mobo?

You can't. If you can't even get into the BIOS setup with the new modules then they're probably just not going to work. They might be bad modules or mislabeled and actually incompatible.

Does it matter that the other side of the new and old RAM look drastically different? https://www.dropbox.com/s/jrhrlalq2uuax80/2013-04-09%2017.17.42.jpg

Nope. As long as it's the correct type of RAM (DDR2, DDR3, number of pins along the edge are the same, etc.) it doesn't matter if the PCB is different or if the chips are arranged differently on the PCB.

Anyone have recommendations for a 1920x1080 monitor? I do not need or want built in speakers, mic, or webcam. Prefer if it has display port in but HDMI/DVI will work too. Budget is $200 or less if possible, $260 max. Prefer to order from NewEgg as well.

I know speakers aren't necessary, but this is a great deal for $210:
