The date system

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 5:45 am

As I'm still kinda new in this game (lvl 25), I've got some things on my mind worth clarifying

When I, in Skyrim, press select (ps3) to 'wait' for hours or days, then the date moves on as well (why wouldn't it?)

And here's the question: Does the date matter in any way? Will the dates open unique quests or adventures as time goes by? Will anything what so ever happen as time progresses in Skyrim, or is it just a fun feature?

I think its just a "realism" thing to be honest, it has no impact on the game, unless theres some quests like in Oblivion which requrie you to be somewhere at a certain TIME... not date however.

Once upon a time they did. Go far enough back in the series and certain events only take place on certain days of the week. Now, though, I think it's largely vestigial.

Okay :)
That's what I figured, but I just thought that it would be a cool addition (the season enabling certain parts of the game)

I wish they'd give you a calendar in the journal. It'd allow two things: actually understanding the dating system in ES; a sense of time for how your character has progressed/evolved over time. Imagine pulling up the Calendar tab next to the Quests tab and seeing little snippets of what you did on each calendar day ...

One quest comes to mind. Not to spoil too much but you aquire an NPC's schedule, that gives you a day and location, and you have to try to meet up with him.

I forgot about that quest. I think it's the only one that does, though.

Just a fun feature/ something that makes the world feel alive. I'm sure someone will add a mod that make the game have seasons like summer and winter, (they already have the calender for it.) But all in all, it just makes it feel like the months are just literally rolling by.

I made a similar thread before. It's a pointless feature. In Daggerfall (never played TES back that far), they had corresponding holidays apparently. Some sound like they'd make awesome quest settings too.

Yeah as people have said, it just makes the game feel more alive. I don't think there are as many quests that require you to do something at a certain time (like Oblivion).

It may be pointless but it is nice. I mean, in lore, they record events using years, so obviously there must be some lore established calendar already in game.

On a slightly unrelated note. What's the date of the events at Helgan? I know its 4E 201, but what day of the week and what month does that all take place?

There is established lore. It's just that they haven't made much use of it in this game. I'd say this is one of few valid complaints from oldschool people about the dumbing down of the series.

For example, the "3rd of Hearthfall" is a holiday, like a twisted version of Halloween. "Tales and Tallows", a celebration of Necromancy. I could see cool (maybe even funny) quest potential here.

No other holiday divides the people of (this city) like the 3rd of Hearth Fire. A few of the oldest, more superstitious men and women do not speak all day long for fear that the evil spirits of the dead will enter their bodies. Most citizens enjoy the holiday, calling it Tales and Tallows, but even the most lighthearted avoid the dark streets of (this city), for everyone knows the dead do walk tonight. Only the Mages Guild completely thrives on this day. In celebration of the oldest magical science, necromancy, all magical items are half price today.

Or the 30th of Frostfall. "Emperor's Day". They should include this and bring in those goblins from the GameJam vid.

Once the 30th of Frostfall, the Emperor's Birthday, was the most popular holiday of the year. Great traveling carnivals entertained the masses, while the aristocracy of (this city) enjoyed the annual Goblin Chase on horseback. Recently, these traditions have fallen into neglect. It has been decades since there was a big carnival in (this city) and longer still since a (mayor?) of the (this city) sponsered a Goblin Chase.

Todd hinted that there could be some DLC with seasonal changes in foliage. It would be nice to see the Rift aspen trees in full summer splendor. Crossing fingers ...

Hell, you could make use of 4 GameJam features right there. Seasonal changes, goblins, horse combat, and spears (either you or the goblins lol).

This is something I've been wondering. Are dates in journals such as 13th of Sun's Dusk 1E139, 4th of Morning Star, 1E140, 21st of Evening Star, 3F367 just randomly made up or is there a system of an actual calendar (real or game created) that is in place?

Yes, there's a real system. As I pointed above..

Here's a list from Daggerfall.

Nope, not random at all. Go on to UESP, head to the lore page, there are a list of major historical events in tamriel and what day (or at least what year) they occur. As I have said, there are already days and months established in game.

Well, I could see why they wouldn't have this. I mean, what if you missed a holiday, you would have to wait a whole in game year to experience it again.
