The Death Penalty ... and the aftermath

Post » Wed Sep 11, 2013 10:36 am

A search revealed the last topic for this that contained the word "death" was back in April. In accordance with the Necro Prevention Act, that shows favor to starting a new topic after an abandonment of at least 3 months, I started this one.

I wanted some newly formed insight as to what is to be expected from developer commentary and what the community would like to happen in the circumstances of death in the game.

My hope is that the penalty is worthy of the character dying in the first place. I feel that nothing but good can come from a stringent ruling and the result of total loss of equiped gear, if not the total loss of inventory. Otherwise the game becomes way too casual and death has absolutely no meaning at all.

I see talk of a "revive" option upon death, where the player is reincarnated on the spot. I truly hope this is not implemented, and is solely related, to Beta. ( Note : This is not an encouragement to discuss Beta information. Simply and observation for the reasoning behind the mechanic. )

I welcome harsh and complex diversities within the ramifications of death. It will promote better gameplay, as a whole. The combat becomes more skilled oriented as it will encourage tactical and deliberate encounters, as opposed to just mindlessly gaping through the gameworld. It also encourages a thriving economy as it fuels the need for a true supply and demand concept.

Any thoughts, comments or relative developer inspired media is welcome.

It's already been stated there will be item degradation upon death. (Coming from Darkfall, I am a bit disappointed)

I truly hope there is more to it than that. Item degradation is hardly a consequential of dying. I remember that concept being thrown around in January, but come on... surely they are not sticking with that.

It was original exp loss, got knocked down to item degradation apparently with repairs. Sad imho, but better than nothing.

XP loss, even skill progression set back, item degradation, quest reset, instance reset, a 10 minute debuff that reduces xp gain/dmg/defense/regen. Any of those could work or multiples of them. Sadly it probably won't even make it to item degradation, just a little slap on the wrist that doesn't bruise their itsy, bitsy hand.

That entitlement crowd sure knows how to ruin a game.

I think you will be happier looking into hardcoe niche MMOs rather than getting upset that mainstream MMOs choose to appeal to the mainstream.

Even though it seems to drive people insane whenever the word "Guild Wars 2" gets dropped on here, I'm going to say it:

Guild Wars 2's death system, in my opinion, is much better. It basically allows you to go into a "downed state" and try to heal yourself, or be healed by your teammates. I think this promotes teamwork, and can especially heighten the tension when an ally goes down and you have to break away from the attack to pick him or her back up.

When you die, your armor takes damage and you respawn at a shrine or waypoint of your choosing... most a reasonable distance away. Well, enough of a distance for you to go "Yeah, shouldn't have done that..." as you run back to your group.

I prefer a system like this. I like to think others will agree with me.

I'm not upset, more amused by many of the debates put forth in this forum.

I didn't realize the "mainstream" was to have everything handed to you without a challenge or consequences for your actions.

How can people claim to have fun in a game w/o a challenge? It's sad that the "trophy for last place" crowd has moved into MMO's, if we are lucky maybe they'll stick to consoles so some of us won't have to deal with them.

For someone who is not upset, you are doing a very good impression.

i think it's fine how it is now. we don't know yet how much repair costs will be. I also noticed in your op that you didn't suggest any alternatives. if you suggest corpse run, I will lol.

While ago I was on about the death penalty too. But i came to realized that ESO will be just another WOW clone.

Zen doesnt want to strain casual gamers with death penalty. Thats just the way its going to be, sadly.

And what way is that?

Alternatives to what? Other than the preferences I stated?

I need help understanding exactly what that means.
