The Dunmer [Skyrim, Book Spoilers]

Does anyone else believe the Dunmer are going to bounce back. It seems like Bethesda likes to just keep having every major disaster happen to them. You dont really have any of the other races having such inconsistent luck other then the Dunmer.

Lets start with Azura. Originally the Dunmer were Chimer, but were "robbed" when hte Tribunal used the tools of Kagrenac on the Heart to gain their powers. Most of us know this and as a result, Azura turned them into Dunmer. From this point, it seems, when your entire race has been cursed by a Daedra Prince, you have already hit hard.

Then, you lose your independence when your Tribunal hands over your lands to the EMpire in exchange for a little autonomy. Dunmer house traditions are heavily disrupted and their way of life interrupted so that the guys on top can stay in power.

So the gods you worship have cursed you, and your living gods have handed you over to an Empire of men.

However, it seems this was not enough as Ald-Ruhn is destroyed is destroyed in the Great Oblivion Crisis. (Be it known, it seems, Summerset Isles seems lore wise, like it was the worst place hit during the crisis, but youd think Mehrunes Dagon would grant a reprieve to the one people who worship Daedric Princes). So now, ontop of worshipping people who seem to have little value for you as a race, they have no qualms of killing you either.

Then to make matters worse, we have the events of the Infernal City, where the Ministry of Truth crashes, destroying Vivec the city, causes the Red Mountain to erupt and destroys the Dunmer Homeland. Now they have been devalued by their gods, attacked by their gods, had their land handed over AAAAAAND have lost a good portion of their homeland.

FInally, they are driven to Solsteim when the Argonians invade Morrowind. They are also forced to flee into other provinces and scatter.

Does it seem like the Dunmer are slowly going the way of the Dwemer? Or do you think they will finally hit a reprieve and bounce back from their last few thousand years of bad luck?

Okay, there is no doubt that the thing with the Ministry of Truth was an extraordinary disaster. I don't quite see it in the other cases, though.

The armistice was a genius contract. The Dunmer kept all their laws and could more or less live on as before. The Empire had to ensure safety, but according to Morrowind law. That doesn't seem like a bad result for the Dunmer. They had about the best conditions of all Tamrielic provinces.

The Oblivion crisis hit everyone. One lost city like Ald'ruhn isn't such a big deal, compared to the whole. Expecting Mehrunes Dagon to spare the Dunmer because, in former times, they worshipped him, seems a bit of a stretch. He is not exactly a charity. He is the embodiment of natural catastrophes - like volcano eruptions. So the destruction of the biggest city on Red Mountain seems somewhat straightforward.

But the biggie is the Ministry of Truth affair. The Dunmer on Solstheim seem to do well with their Nord neighbors, so that is a sliver of hope. There are also enough of them in Skyrim and Cyrodiil. They seem not to be in danger of disappearing, so I don't see any parallel in Dwemer history. Let's see whether the Dunmer will see their experience as humbling or become even more radical. Time will tell.

Not much has been revealed about the current state of Morrowind at present, but if you pay attention to some of the NPC conversations it would appear that they are bouncing back. There's the apprentice in the Mage's guild who claims she's of House Telvanni stock, but if you read the journal of the Archmagister on the Pride of Tel Vos, he claims that the Telvanni were destroyed when the argonians sacked Morrowind, which would hint that Great Houses have been recreated/reformed. And since you don't see anything of them Skyrim, you've got to assume they are.

The Dark Brotherhood mention that they recently received a contract from Great House Redoran. That means two things, that the Morag Tong are probably gone, and that Great House Redoran still exists. There's also a dunmer in Riften who says that "Leaving Mournhold was a mistake". I believe there are a few others that mention Mournhold too.

Well, if you concentrate a lot of Daedra worshippers in one province then there will be more potential Mythic Dawn recruits willing to bring hell into Tamriel. So it actually makes sense that the Summerset Isle was hit hard. And the fact that a lot of people worshipped other Daedra doesn't mean a rat′s ass to Mehrunes Dagon. If you get a chance to weaken your concurrents, in this case the other Daedric Princes, why not take it and kill some worshippers of theirs?

Also, there was nothing wrong with the armistice. Imperial protection for being a bit more lenient towards free trade and Imperial ways? Sure, for the people of Morrowind it was one hell of a good deal. Safety, law and order with little intrusions in their private life. The Dunmer will survive, the MoT and the eruption was their punishment for forgetting Love and being heartless mean bastards. Now they learn to act like normal people! In the long end this will be good in some way or another.

To Marlech; Morrowind was not destroyed. Southern Morrowind was taken and held by the Argonians (They probably continued north too, but they must have left there to come back to their marshes), Vvardenfell was made more uninhabitable than it already was before by the eruption, heck the sea may still be hot as hell for all we know, but western mainland Morrowind could very well still be in pretty good shape. Wasnt that also where House Redoran had their mainland territory? I believe so. Therefore it makes sense that the Redoran are still alive.

Blacklight is about as far north-west as a Morrowind city goes, yes. It's practically a days swim from Fort Frostmoth or Gnisis. I don't believe Southern Morrowind, or any Morrowind for that matter was ever held, as such. I believe the Argonians invaded, killed whatever Dunmer they could find until all Dunmer had left Morrowind, then they simply turned their heels (claws?) and trotted back to the Hist. Their intention wasn't invasion, it was revenge.

The southern parts of Morrowind are marshlands, could very well originally be parts of Black Marsh. If the Argonians held it in their grip the Argonians would keep the place safe so that the Hist can spread its roots even further. It makes sense to me; if you got your revenge on your main enemy who have now fled the area, and you see "Hey, this area here is bordering my place, and it also fits my race very well! Give it maybe 200 years and you have expanded the Hist considerable!", why not occupy it and keep it safe until the Hist can spread? Makes sense to me.
