The Elder Scrolls: Darktide

Post » Sat Jun 23, 2012 10:28 am

The Elder Scrolls Online currently seems to cater more towards PvE, restricting PvP to one zone. And its understandable, currently the market supports restricted PvP environments. However, it fights towards the freedom of choice and consequences the choices make. The cause and effect of the open world that TES has seems to be lacking. MMO market is currently divided between those who think its a good thing, and those who think its a bad thing.

What I'm proposing is a FFA RvR PvP server (A server that's RvR but with the option of civil war), very much like Asheron's Call: Darktide. Since the original AC did not support FFA PvP, a server called the Darktide was created to cater to the needs and wants of the people who support complete open world and the freedom of choice, even though it will ultimately lead to an experience that may be considered grievous or even frustrating. Yet a lot people wanted to take up this challenge, and its a common statement that the Darktide server was the one and true Asheron's Call. Exception being that the RvR still takes place between 3 factions, but why there couldn't be inner struggles between the factions guilds/clans/houses/tribes itself? Or just the people?

To many TES players, this would be the more lore accurate choice.

What does the community think? Would this be a good consensus in the argument wheter or not PvP should be restricted etc.?

I personally consider this by far the best choice for the problem, it may seperate the community a bit, but it brings all the like-minded people to the same servers.

/SIgn if you agree.

What some people fail to understand is that not everyone plays MMOs to PvP. That may be YOUR cup of tea, but many people would rather only participate in PvP under controlled conditions, or not at all. You know when that started? Ultima Online. People got tired of minding their own business only to have some "Kewl Dewd" and his thugs jump out of nowhere, gank them, steal all their stuff, and then say "U svck!" before running off to wherever. Free for all open world PvP is an open invitation for people to ruin the game for others. So no thank you. They need to keep it as it is.

Do you have any idea how big Cyrodiil is? If they are going with the same heightmap as was used in Oblivion, then you are looking at a massive environment. You won't just be PvPing around a city. There are several towns and cities in Cyrodiil. And they will likely play into a territorial control mechanic that your faction will have to engage in before you can even make a run on the Imperial City itself. I see the attempt to control the capitol as part of an extensive campaign. I think you will find TESO's PvP far more open-world than you are giving it credit for.

It takes about 20 minutes to walk from one end of Cyrodiil to the other in Oblivion. If they keep the same scale for Cyrodiil in TESO, you'll have plenty of ground to cover.

The server would be for that exact reason, that it isn't everyone's cup of tea. People who like/want it will join the server, the rest will stay on the normal server. How does it affect you? In none way at all. Even though Cyrodil would be a large piece of continent, I am still not capable of assaulting members of my own faction. and if someone comes and says "Lol noob" to me, you can be sure I want to smash the guys face in, and that I want to do. I did not discuss full loot at all, and obviously if such feature does not work in the game, its not introduced, I didn't even consider full loot FFA PvP server for this game, just an FFA server. And its not an open invitation to people who you think ruin your fun. To a lot of us, PvP without restricted environment equals fun. And yes, being forced into a fight with 50% health and uneven numbers is fun, to me, its a challenge that i wish to take on.

I would play a free for all PvP server where all zones are open to all and only capital cities are safe. (Mordred on DAoC) I don't think I could handle a system where you lose all your stuff when you die though. Too much time is needed to invest into an MMO to just get ganked and lose it all. However, I would play something in between. Something where when you do you lose gold or maybe one or two less rare items. You see the problem with this is the devs need to do a lot of work and balancing to make a server rule set like that work. unfortunately, because its a lower amount of people interested in that style, ZOS probably won't spend any time trying to work it out and make it an option. They just want to get the game out the way they designed it and see if its successful.

Exactly the reason I did not discuss a loot tabled system for players. At max, in a game like this one could drop 10% of the gold they are carrying (Assuming one can put gold in the bank), and perhaps one item from their inventory (Their whole inventory and 100% of their gold if they are criminals = murdered people from their same faction). But otherwise, no loot tables for the server, just the option of FFA PVP.

Cyrodiil is a huge province, and the normal RvR servers ARE for hardcoe PvP'ers, it's just a different type of PvP than FFA PvP, and it creates an overall more intense experience than FFA PvP.

Different argument altogether, definition of hardcoe PvP. But at least in my opinion, RvR combined with the possibility of civil war is more intense and lore accurate than plain RvR, especially when the current factions include the races selected.

I would love that! Makes so much more sense! Honestly, I would be fine with accepting the three alliances as canon if we were allowed to fight inside them, say the Great Houses fighting for dominance amongst the Dunmer within the Ebonheart Pact both through politics and minor physical warfare. That would be amazing.

It keeps the Imperial City as the main prize and ultimate achievement, with the largest battles naturally happening in and around Cyrodiil, but also allows for skirmish warfare and battles for supremacy in the surrounding provinces. THAT is a world I could fall in love with, and would regularly check in with on a daily basis to see how the political situations in each province and faction had been developing overnight.

Might be nothing more than a dream at this stage, but that really is the kind of forward-thinking and engaging MMO I would love to dedicate some of my spare time to. Forced factions fighting for Cyrodiil only, and being completely static internally... is just a little too bland given the MMOs I'm used to playing, and the political intrigue of the TES series that I've come to love.

Back in my day, during DAoC, they had multiple server types. Some were FFA PVP, some were COOP, some were regular. You pick the type that suited you. Everyone got what they wanted.

We can only hope ZOS puts the time and effort into making these different server types. I loved DAoC and Mythic pre-EA really did some amazing ideas in the MMO space.

Just have a specific server to PVP then the PVErs can play uninterrupted and the PVPers can play a sword n sorcery version of BF3

Well, assuming the engine has something of this value in place. It should be few extra hours of coding.

Well, or a lore-rich, more brutal environment, your call.

Please do not assume something takes X amount of hours to code. Unless you have been part of a development team for an MMO you haven't got the slightest clue.

I'd imagine making a FFA pvp server would take quite a bit of extra work. one thing that jumps to mind is now the devs have to balance all the classes against all the classes. Also you have to tweak spells and what not to hit players of your ownn faction. You have to open up all zones to everyone. You have make certain large cities safe zones where pvp is disabled. The list goes on

Nope. Basics of the balance mechanics of a PvP mmorpg, where classes aren't balanced based on class vs. class, but group vs. group. And I'd guess the most balanced group of classes to fight against is your own faction, hm?

I didn't, but if the engine supports it, and a lot of TES fans would support it, it shouldn't be that much of an issue to create a server like that. By "takes a few hours to code" I simply meant its actually doable within the budget and a time frame that would not hurt the development too much.

If anything it should be the PVE-RP servers that allow you to cross boarders and go to other factions cities.

Well, I'd figure "normal" server with the tag "RP" on it would suffice. At least I assume you can go to enemy factions areas, it would be [censored] if not.

All the information bouncing around is so unclear at this stage, I mean the developers nullify even their own "information leaks" in other interviews, whats there to be trusted?

You said that exactly same thing twice. How do you implement Civil war into an RvR type game. Just curious?... it's easier to kick back and offer ridiculous suggestions than to actually get your hands dirty and figure out how you could realistically implement this and balance it in a way that would make the game fun. You shouldn't just F up the game because it would make sense "lore-wise".
