Is the ESRB rating system for Skyrim incorrect?

Post » Tue Jul 02, 2013 11:45 am

I just noticed that on the bottom left corner of this website is a badge which points out that Skyrim contains sixual themes. I think that's false because I've played the game for about 20 hours but I don't recall encountering anything even mildly suggestive.

I've read that you can get married in Skyrim, but anyone who has ever been married knows the difference between being married and having six. Generally the six stops once you get married. That's one of the reasons why there's so much divorce and cheating.

On the other hand, I have seen people mentioning drug addiction multiple times and yet they don't feel the need to put “Use of drugs” on the ESRB label? This makes no sense to me.

Do the people doing the rating actually play the games themselves?

I think the whole "sixual Themes" thing refers to Haelga and her Bunkhouse in Riften. If you go in her room, it's pretty obvious what goes on in there. Plus she's a worshipper of Dibella and "Dibellan Arts" is six so...

Also about drugs, Skooma is a drug in TES, as is moon sugar and sleeping tree sap. You can easily get and consume large amounts of them. I know the effects don't make them seem like drugs but they are.

There are some dialogs where they talk about six, and there are a couple of books, like the Lusty Argonian Maid.

However, there is no gratuitous six, if that is what your asking.

I think one of the Battle-Borns mentions something about snuggling up with a Nord woman on a cold Skyrim night when he is describing the benefits of having a clan house (or something along those lines. It was in Whiterun, I am sure).

The ESRB rating for Skyrim is completely wrong IMHO. Thing is, the ESRB is made up of old elephant grey, wrinkly, conservative, women who look like this - http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20081207010758/spongebob/images/f/fe/Fish.jpg or like this - http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lu866oyuyZ1qiwuhxo1_500.gif

Remember, these types still think of "video games" as things for children and as such, they are even more ridiculous than normal people. IMO, they didnt give Skyrim an 18+ rating because of six or drugs, because there is basically ZERO six and ZERO drugs in this game compared to what you see on even network tv. These folks probably gave it the 18+ rating because of its use of "magic" (i.e., dark sided evil non-christian satanic stuff) or the promenence of non christian, non jesus religions that are found in the game. This game should be 13+ not 18+ Mature.

Pretty much potions are drugs. They don't come out and say it, but a little bottle of stuff that gives you tons of energy or helps you hit harder, or gives you more mental capacity? Those are drugs.

You guys are all wrong. What I said in post #11 is dead on correct.

Remember, Serana wasnt around when the ESRB gave their rating of this game. The ESRB is made up of super religious types who are NOT your critical thinkers, artists or artistically inclined. They ARE predominately the types I spoke of in post #11.

Maybe we could behave in a more mature manner regarding the subject? Statements like this do nothing to further your position due to the fact they are packed full of insults and rely on emotion rather than logic. Even if you were completely correct in calling out people on their actions, it's best to phrase it in a polite and constructive manner - you wouldn't like to be talked down to when someone calls you out on something. Also, the more harsh you are in your wording, the less likely you are to get your opponents to engage in a constructive discussion on that particular issue - why should they listen to someone beating them about the head? There are people out there unlikely to listen anyway, and your post gives them all the more reason to ignore you.

Who? You made it sound as if everyone in this thread disagrees with you. One person quoted you with a short answer, everyone else after your post is just discussing the topic at hand.

Also, be careful about that name calling towards the ESRB. If they were really like that, there wouldn't be a Daggerfall or a gentlemen's club in Morrowind.

Not to single you out or saying your opinion is not welcomed, just trying to understand your post. And like Kaidonni said, you can post in a more polite/civil manner than that

Yeah. They just have an agreed upon criteria as to what a game must meet to be within a certain rating. It's nothing personal for them because they're just trying to make sure people know what they're getting into. That's what the rating is there for(And it's also what some foolish parents are good at ignoring).

Bingo.

ESRB ratings are more of a word of caution than personal preference. Thanks for the definition, Caldera
