The Fatal Castle

Ever wonder what Arx Fatalis means?

Well, I did. And even with my relatively small pool of knowledge about Latin, I identified it as latin.

So I googled it, and in google translate it means "The castle fatal"

And, since google translate has no implication of grammar I will have to deduce that it actually means "The Fatal Castle"

Now you know!

Hmmm... Fatalis can either be the genitive or the nominative form of the word. And it translates to roughly: fated, deathly (fatal), destined.

Arx is the nominative form of arx. And it translates to roughly: citadel, stronghold, height, hilltop, defense, refuge.

My translation?... :

Deathly Refuge -- or -- Citadel of Fate. I think either fits the game pretty well.

Fortress of Fate would be a good direct to English translation. If you translate it into French and then into English, I believe you get something more like Destiny's Fortress.

I may be interesting to note that the game's name was simply "Arx" at first. The word "fatalis" was added shortly before release due to the publisher demand.

And from my fuzzy memory : "Arx" is from an Italian region or village name via Raphael Colantonio's personal history.

Great memory! Raf and Marco Mele (an Arkane co-founder) both come from an Italian village once called Arx (I believe this is the medieval village of Fumone, that used to be called Arx Fumonis a few centuries ago; I'll try to get this confirmed). ;)
