The first time a Bethesda RPG did not win GOTY...

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2015 6:10 pm

Just finished watching The Game Awards 2015.

So..yea we all kinda expected this to happen. 2015 is a challenging year with lots of good titles and FO4 came up short. Not only that, it didn't even win anything in other categories.

So to anyone who hated FO4, I hope you feel vindicated now.

Maybe the team should go back to the drawing board to see what went wrong.

And for god's sake please don't follow up with a Fallout Online.

Who cares? TW3 is a better game from a technical standpoint, and they treated their fans with respect, so they deserved the rewards they got. Doesn't mean i think the game is good though, but its just awards. And they did not win for Morrowind, but i am guessing the award show didn't exist back then.

Most reputable presenters have the decency to wait for the year to end before handing out awards. Still a month left in this year.

There is no true game of the year, it's just all opinion. I personally don't think Witcher 3 was good at all. I thought it was one of the most bland, boring, generic and overrated games this year.

Well the game awards is one of those shows that tells the gamers that this is the Game of the Year, and they eat it up, nom nom.

Not winning GOTY is one thing, but for a Bethesda RPG not to win a single category is a lil worrying.

I think the 7 year development cycle and Bethesda habit of reusing game engine really hurt it alot.

7 year developing cycle? How do you figure they made Skyrim and two expansion packs for it?

Maybe not 7 years I guess, but...

The Fallout 4 page on the Fallout wiki reads:

Development began right after Fallout 3 's release, in 2009. The game had minor development due to Skyrim being developed at the same time. After Skyrim was released in 2011, Fallout 4 became the primary project for Bethesda.

Also:

"In August 2010, Todd Howard revealed in an interview with Eurogamer that Bethesda was working on two projects; one had been in development for two years (beginning after Fallout 3 was released), and the other was still in pre-production. It is now known that the title farther along in development was The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. There is still no confirmation on what the second game is."

At the end of the end of the day FO4 was kinda underwhelming compared to the hype that was created around it. Honestly even though I'm a huge Bethesda fan, I agree that the GOTY is the W3.

Maybe this will force Bethesda to rethink what they have been doing and look back at their best game they've created, Morrowind as inspiration for TES VI.

This. Awards are just a way for the parasitic end of the video game industry (the part that makes a living simply by talking about things that designers create and players purchase) to make a few extra bucks by hopping on the hype train that game publishers and fans have already boarded, and rooting around in the seat cushions for loose change. Developers play along with it because at best they get nearly-free publicity with near-zero extra effort, and at worst it's a chance to send somebody in the company who deserves a pat on the back to attend the event and get an evenings entertainment on somebody elses dime.

Who wins which awards has nothing to do with how much gamers enjoy, or hate, their games.

So who did these awards? How were they selected? Voting? When did the voting take place? Fallout hasn't been out very long ... it may not have been out long enough to be seriously considered.

It's my Game of the Year. There, it won an award. My award is every bit as credible as one based on somebody else's opinion.

Let's check in this time next year and compare the number of people still playing Fallout to the number of people still playing whatever it is that is currently in vogue among those who style themselves the arbiters of what constitutes the Game of the Year.

I honestly don't think it matters considering there were some amazing games this year that didn't win anything either and other amazing games that weren't even nominated.

Besides, Fallout 4 is still making a TON of money. That is the thing that really matters when it comes to games.

In a live interview at E3 they mentioned they had a small team working on Fallout 4 since Fallout 3.

On topic: I'm glad. I didn't think Bethesda deserved any awards this year for their game. They made a lot of poor decisions with this one.

On the other hand, despite the horrible glitches at launch, the Witcher 3 was a fantastic RPG with solid mechanics and a good story. I'm a little upset MGSV didn't win more awards, but that's Konami's fault for some of their decisions with Kojima.

Awards went down how I assumed they would for action-adventure, music, GOTY and RPG of the year. Hell CDPR actually talked to their community and listened to them unlike Bethesda devs, so it really isn't any surprise here.

Its a jury. The only awards i know that has fan voting is The Golden Joystick, which was before Fallout 4 released. So they will be in the 2016 version of that.

They didn't listen to my feedback, so no? From my perspective they made a game that didn't respect its own franchise. It was not even a worthy sequel, it was a stand alone game. The third in the series felt stand alone. Hugely dissapointing.

Why? Do you normally like being told what to like?

Who care's what some cretins on a panel think? It's entirely subjective.

really? which do you think they care about more, sales or awards? the game is selling gangbusters. awards are nice, but sales are what pay the bills.

I think Bethesda has always wanted the latest version of their game engine to be used by the flagship Elder Scrolls series and Fallout is to use the recycled version of the engine when it gets dated.

Proof: it's no secret that fallout 3 was using the game engine that powered Oblivion. FO3 got away with it tho because compared to FO2, it looked completely different. And lots of people were intrigued with a Bethesda styled post apocalyptic open world.

Fast forward to today, I guess many people feel FO4 doesnt look that much different from FO3 I guess, and everyone caught what they were doing.

it was totally obvious that the witcher 3 would win game of the year, fallout 4 is a good game but did not stand a chance against tw3

I find the Witcher games to be terrible, Fallout 4 is more addicting and I put more hours in it than most RPG games I play. It's just opinions. Why would people hold the opinions of a small group seriously? Because it's on TV? People who buy into this must also buy into the sixiest white man alive every year in People Magazine.

The Witcher 3 had a good story? Hahahahahahahahahaha!

The Witcher 3 had a mediocre story, bland characters and one of the most boring worlds I have ever seen in a fantasy RPG.

That is exactly what the Game awards is about though. Telling people what to like, and what is the game of the year. Perfect for the masses.

Supposedly the Game that wins GotY is the game that wins the most GotYs from the most media outlets. So Fallout 4 not winning GotY is absolutely meaningless. Fallout 4 just came out while Metal Gear Solid and The Witcher 3 had months to clean up the various problems that they came with.

I like to know what the game makers think is the best. I'll wait for the GDC awards, thanks.

I'm actually playing Witcher 3 myself. In fact, because of TW3, I actually played TW1, TW2 immediately before it.

One thing for sure, CD Project Red has some very good storytellers. Definitely alot better then Bethesda. But I'm disappointed that none of the Witcher games is a seamless open world which is something Bethesda does very well.
