The Forum and IE

Post » Fri Aug 10, 2012 4:09 am

First off, I know I shouldn't be using IE. But, as the SysAdmin at work thinks that IE is the end-all be-all of "secure" web browsers for a corporate environments, I'm forced to stop using Chrome for my browsing needs... (Don't get me started on the 1000 myriad reasons he's wrong...)

So here's the problem - the background transparency is ALL jacked up on my end. I'm getting the entire background bleeding through.

How can I fix this?

If you can't get transparency to work you can try the Elegant theme. Though IMO its grey-on-white text is about as easy to read as the mess you're getting now.

1. Clear you cache, it looks like an image isn't properly loading

2. Try compatibility mode if using IE9

3. Tell your sysadmin about http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=187945. IE is usually used at work for two reasons: Lack of active directory software deployment (Chrome has a msi package, so it can be pushed out) and lack of GPO tie-ins (As linked above, Chrome has group policy tie-ins). If your sysadmin realizes chrome is a viable option, he may switch.

Just FYI... There's an extension for Chrome that lets you run IE in Chrome. Then again, it's a relative moot point, now. I used to use it because I hated the way IE looked, (navigation bar) but also had the same "you gotta use IE" mandate come down from the top. Since IE9 is a direct rip off of Chrome, so they look about the same now.

... and three, "nobody ever got fired for buying IBMMicrosoft". That one can be tricky to work around.

None of that has worked (clearing cache, resetting IE, etc). Still getting the same issue. I'm using IE8, btw, because all machines in the office are still running XP.

Guess I'll be using the IP.Board theme...

I'm surprised no other IE users have had this issue.

What's really odd is that it loads the page correctly, but if I click anywhere within the page it does that.

First thing I did when I saw you make the thread was to load IE(9) and check in case something had changed in the forum settings, there were no problems, and as I know quite a number of other members use IE - although most would never admit to it in CD - if it was a general problem we would have heard by now.

So it's only broken for me.

I'll check it from home tonight. Though I may have to actually download IE8, because I absolutely do not use it at home.

One of the first things I tried.

Then the solution is clear. You must try to take over the sysadmin's position.

But in more related news. A search on IE8 transparency issues brings up several issues with opacity not working properly in IE8. A quick check of this page's source shows me that beth is using an opacity setting on the page's css.

Sorry man.

I'm just a Graphic Designer / Web Monkey. SysAdmin isn't for me.

But that would mean it's not an isolated problem. And as Rohugh said, if it were widespread, then they would have heard of it by now.

Hard to notice something's wrong without having a reference. Most people who use IE use it because they don't know about alternatives/are too lazy to use alternatives. For them, the sight may always look like that, but because they don't know any better, they think that's the way it's supposed to look

I find it hard to believe that their screen could look like it does in my screenshot and they DON'T think there's a problem. Hell, you can't even read anything like that.

Yeah, I tested it on one of the remaining XP computers (everything else has IE9 loaded) in this office, and it doesn't look like that. So the problem is definitely on your end, possibly the way IE is configured.

On the bright side, there are other themes and I'm sure there are http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/DEFRON/Desktop/domainemail.jpg that could be on your screen.

Shameless excuse to post my Work Google Apps email background :hehe:

Yeah, I used XP and IE8 just two months ago, and it didn't look wrong to me.
