To the hardcoe, oldschool fans... is Dead Money worth it?

Post » Fri Dec 10, 2010 11:04 am

I've been reading the odd review of Dead Money, and it seems pretty interesting. However, as a PC user, I'm of course wondering if to the old-school crowd (as in, to the people who Fallout 1 & 2 represent the perfect Fallout games), is Dead Money worth buying? Is it "Fallout enough"?

Obviously, if I ever get to play the DLC (which I consider to be "no, until I get a release date"), I'd like to know if it would appeal to my sensibilities, which I would consider to be fairly old-school. Admittedly, I did start with Fallout 3, but IMO, Fallout 2 is by far the best game in the series to date (though New Vegas comes a very close second!).

I would say that Dead Money isn't very... "Fallout-y" but it was still a good experience for me. I enjoyed the DLC and I'd say it's definitely worth the cash, but that's just my opinion. It's a nice stray from the norm.

It's a game within a game. Not a bad game mind you, it has great writing and atmosphere and presents a unique survival aspect to it.
But does it feel like Fallout?
Nope.
Other than Elijah being from the brotherhood, DoGod being a super mutant and Dean being a ghoul Obsidian could probably have sold it as it's own game SAW: Postapocalyptica.

Survival aspect feels too much "horror/action" to feel like it's fallout.
Enemies feels like they were taken from some horror flick as well.
And the quest line doesn't, while well written, give me a lot of motivation for doing it. (I honestly don't know why my character would want to go to the sierra madre, the arcade game doesn't give me any reason to do it except for the case of just doing it for the hell of it.)

It's a great arcade game.
But horrible fallout arcade game.

I see. So from the sounds of things, it's a little bit like The Pitt. Is it better or worse than that, at least?

(And I liked The Pitt, easily the best of the Fallout 3 DLC, next to Point Lookout, so hopefully I'll enjoy it for that side of things!)

The arcade game is awesome.
But while awesome it doesn't feel like Fallout.

I consider myself a fairly old school fan.

Dead Money might be the most engaging Fallout experience that I've ever had.

Excellent writing and characterization. Awesome voice acting. Almost a survival-horror type feel.

No, it's not exactly like all of the previous games in every way. But if I wanted that, I'd just replay the old ones.

Wonder what NMA is saying... *runs odd to check it out* :obliviongate:

Sounds a bit elitest to only want one groups opinion and nott the general population. Anywho, based on what I've read, it seems the story is well written, but the gameplay is linear, not unlike Operation Anchorage.

A lot of the "old school" tropes are there. You've got a ruined, dilapidated buildings, you've got high technology which proved unreliable and had unintended consequences, the mix of low and high tech. It doesn't really have the black humor of the old school games, apart from the irony of the technology intended to keep people safe becoming a death trap.

It was Fallout-ish enough for me. I recognize the bind the devs are in. They want to deliver an original experience that includes elements of the Fallout cannon while at the same time they don't want it to be too derivative. They didn't want to make a dlc that was simply warmed over leftovers of previous Fallouts.

In my opinion, better than any of the Fallout 3 DLCs.

There comes a point when bending over backwards to apease the purists can hold you back.

At some point you can't be afraid to take some chances and inject some "newness". At the end of the day, in most any entertainment genre, old school purists are not going to be your most "valuable" demopraphic.

(MLB doesn't get this which is one of the reasons the NFL is kicking their ass).

Well like I said, it's the old-school Fallouts that appeal the most to my sensibilities, so I wanted the opinions of people with those same tastes. I wouldn't call that elitist. Specific, yes, but not elitist by any means.

If you read most of the gripes about Vegas from the mainstream is the lack of "horror" and large dungeons from FO3. Guess what they did.... put the horror and large dungeon in a DLC....... big surprise! :P
I am an oldschool fan but I love a good shoot'em up adventure as well so I am mildly anticipating the PC release. (at least the Xbox users are beta testing it for us!)

I haven't gotten it yet, so could someone tell me....

Can you actually go back to the place? certain areas blocked off?

Please not to much detail on the story or anything, a general yes/no desription will do.

Also how big would it be DLC wise? Bigger than the Pitt/smaller than Point Look Out?

Take a chance.

Mostly enjoyable, some flaws.

Well, I enjoy every Fallout I've played (F,F2,F:T,F3,F:NV), Tactics was so so, but only because gameplay was a little hard for me (mechanics wise, not difficulty wise), so I dont know if I fit the bill, but I'd say half in half based on what I've read (PS3 user). From what I've gathered, it's very Fallout in terms of Story depth, but in terms of gameplay, it's reminiscent of Operation: Anchorage in terms of linear. (As I said in my prior post)

It's not as linear as Operation: Anchorage or The Pitt. For the most of the dlc you're given a series of quests and you have a choice as to which to do first. The structure is actually similar to most of Bioware's games.

once you leave you can never go back. but once you finish the main quest, you can roam free throughout sierra madre picking up anything you might have left off the first time through. it's definitely a smaller area than P.L.O., but it feels bigger.

My question is: how many of you guys had bugs and glitches with Dead Money? My main concernings are about problems in the game (I mean New Vegas itself) the DLC might cause. I read that the DLC is good, but how many problems did you had?

I had one texture bug with one of the gas-goo things.

VATS can be off with percentages on the enemies. The character still jukes with two-handed weapons. Ed-E has been hostile to players after completing the DLC. Some players have been stuck in rooms (one in particular). One follower of mine was buried up to their chest in a floor and couldn't move. The usual FO:NV stuff. Save early, save often.

Seems that there's nothing tremendous. ED-E is always hostile when you complete the DLC or is only a possibility?

Going INTO the DLC bugged my game, I have followers that will no longer follow me. I didn't find out until I'd left, and I didn't keep a save from the beginning, so the only answer I'm getting is "too bad, so sad, start over, you're borked". Yay.

There's nothing of value in the DLC, it's totally linear and about the least Fallout-ish DLC I've ever seen. It's a railroad, where your choices mean next-to-nothing, again, unFallout-ish.
