The history of the Forums.

Hello humanoid lifeforms, it is I! The Green Sentinel, the most handsome, daring, intelligent and humble man ever to grace these forums.

I'm not here much anymore, for various reasons, but I still recall this place every now and again; and for some reason, I keep getting drawn back. These forums have a long history, one of the longest I've ever seen online in fact, so, what I have brought you all here today is to discuss the history of the forums, how do you see the history of it? What do you believe to be the most important aspects and points in its history?

By the way, for anyone who's new here.... have a fishy stick. http://static.fjcdn.com/pictures/have_93115f_436105.jpg

Mr. Sentinel, it's been a long while since you've been here. I've often wondered where you had gone. Hopefully you're doing well?

Hmmm... well I vaguely remember a couple things about some wasp, and stupid things we used to believe in. Wasn't there some idiot in the Elder Scrolls fanfiction section that posted terrible stories which had "chapters" consist of five to six sentences? How old was that guy, 12? And lets not forget the good old Fantasy Football... whatever happened to that anyways?

Regardless, I remember when I first joined this forum, it was simply The Elderscrolls Fan Forums. The sections were split into Old Elder Scrolls Games, Morrowind, and Oblivion, and than you had Community Discussion at the very bottom of the page to be your salvation. I do sometimes find myself missing the old silver and blue theme that the forum had going for it, as it was something you did not very often see, but the current theme sits just as well with me.

As for history... where is that darn archive that AntiBody has laying around... oh my, it seems to have disappeared. Well, regardless, there is an archive somewhere in the internet that has various old threads saved on it.

And indeed, it has been some time since we last saw you. I must admit, I don't quite miss that terrible look that Gollum gives me whenever you post, but you yourself are fine... you aren't Gollum right?

The most important topic in the history of the forum is the one started by some guy who wanted to learn how to drink soup through his nose in order to impress his intended. We never heard from him again and I fear he perished in a bizarre soup-related accident. This was in the Elder Scrolls Tan period, when TESF was still called TESF.

Ew. I can't remember if he specified the exact type of soup he was planning on using to woo his sweetheart. Not a chunky one, I would guess.

It's always interesting to see cycles repeat when it comes to new games. First there's a building up of hype before release, with people posting crazy expectations with regards to the AI and reactivity of the world that no videogame has ever accomplished. Then it gets released, and you notice a split into two extremes: People who say it's the best game ever made, and people who think it's absolutely horrible.

Then after a while, things calm down and people reach the middle ground of 'it is a good game'. Some people get angry at Bethesda for posting a whole lot of meaningless hype, even though it's generally the fans who generate most of this hype themselves.

Meanwhile a ton of ambitious mod recruiting projects are announced by people with no modding experience who want to lead a large team that does all the work, never to be heard of again.

The only important times are the color changes. For me it was green first, for other older souls it was purple. Then it changed to a differentish green. Then it changed to tan. Then it changed to blackish grey. Then it changed to blackish grey with fancy pictures in the background.

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about...

One thing I just remembered back in the old forum was the pre-made avatars you could choose from. As tiny a detail as it is, it still makes me go, "Damn... this place has changed."

I've been here since before Community Discussion existed, so when I started out all we could do was talk about Morrowind against a green background - or at least, that's all I did. I don't really remember much about that period (puzzle box puzzle box puzzle box), although one thing I do remember is the regular topics posted by new members saying something along the lines of "Hey guys, I've just had a brilliant idea that I'm sure no one else can have had: Morrowind Online!!!!1!" They were always met with the same chorus of "not possible", "shouldn't happen" and "wont happen". Unfortunately Zenimax haven't stuck to that line.

Once CD opened I never really went back, especially since I couldn't play Oblivion until a few years after it was released.

The thread that stuck with me the longest is one where some Vietnamese spambot tried to sell light fittings in very garbled English. That ended up being pretty hilarious, and I still have the archive.

Another thing I remember is the "golden age" when political and religious discussion wasn't banned. I'm glad it is now, even though a lot of people (most of whom weren't around back then) have asked to have it back since.

I made quite a few friends through my years on this board. (Probably started in early 2004)

Zanthia, Sugardrive, Comike, Rosenphelia Godot, and many others who I can't put names to avatars. Most moved on to other forums where you could act like an ass and not get punished.

I've always been here.
