The illusion of choice!

Post » Sat Sep 21, 2013 1:18 pm

The biggest pitfall a game can fall into is to offer the players the option to do everything. One would think this yields a plethora of choices, but in actuality the exact opposite is true. The game has to be designed in such a way that the worst possible set of choices is still viable, thus making any choice you make irrelevant. There is an illusion of choice to succeed, because you simply can't lose. Furthermore, as time passes cookie cutter builds become inevitable. Soon, everyone is the same, which further removes the feeling of choice. Lastly, this kills replay value. Why would you make an alternate character, when that character is effectively no different than the first? Nothing is unique, nothing is worth your time. The game rots and dies from the inside within weeks.

Considering this is only your second post here on the forums and your first was just to say how bad ESO was going to die, it is obvious to anyone that you just want to cause trouble.

Also, here is a http://images.uesp.net/c/c4/Fishystick.jpg for being a new member of the forums.

lol, well I wouldn't go that far. its true I think some things should change in eso but its not going to fail. I think your comment is a bit too strong for what the reality of eso will become. I think eso will be around for a long long time.

I am not trying to cause trouble, but to shed some truth on the matter. ESO will easily make a profit based on it's IP, so it won't fail. But if you think this game will be an enduring MMO, then you are fooling yourself. All their recent design decisions are 100% counter productive to creating a lasting online environment.

You related to the guy who said ESO is not an MMO? SWTOR had a great IP but failed miserably, and if star wars could not prop up a game then Elder Scrolls will certainly not. Thing is, so far it seems the game will be good and being pessimistic about it will do nothing.

Lets see, The have 50+ and 50++ content for the solo players. They have hardmode dungeons for the small group players, They have adventure zones which are essentially raids for the large group players. They have the most sustainable pvp design in existence. Honestly, I do not see how you can make the claims you do.

BTW, pretty much all games have the illusion of choice. To claim this will fail because of such is to say that all games should be failing because they all have best builds.

YOu aren't shedding any truth because you have yet to give any facts. You simply state your opinion them say a generic statement attempting to back it up.

50+ or 50++ content is just rehashed quests, which is nothing significant. Quests & Exploring only increase the time played a miniscule amount, and won't keep players for the long term. The announcement of consoles and the gutted trinity, alongside that horrid Quakecon video, proves beyond a reasonable doubt that the dungeons and 'adventure zones' will be an utter joke. People will steamroll them in a matter of days! Sustainable PvP model? I guess, if by that you mean they don't ever have to bother updating it, then sure. Again, I never used the word 'fail'. Where do you guys keep getting that at? I am merely stating the game will not be an enduring MMO!

"Can you see into the future?" is a last ditch effort of someone without a counter-argument. I can't prove my point, so I will do my best to just discredit the other debater.

Your first post on the forum:

You've come in with the idea that it will fail. That is where we get the idea. You aren't here to discuss, you are here simply spreading doom and gloom based on your assumptions.

They have the trinity in this game. It is just a bit different. The tank still tanks, the healers still heal, the DD still deals damage, they are simply softened a bit as all people in the group needs to be able to take on a mob themselves to at least survive because the tank cannot tank them all.

It is sustainable because it is basically player driven, and they will update it as time goes on.

50+ and 50++ aren't rehashed quests, they are simply the quests you can't do in your faction. It's basically 3 games in one as far as questing goes. The dungeon from the Quakecon video was like a level 15 dungeon. I've yet to play a MMO where the level 15 group content wasn't faceroll.

Again you are simply stating your opinion without any facts to back it up.

No, it is me wondering how you know all of this to be true. We barely know anything about the quests and dungeons, They were overleveled for Quakecon and they stated it was because they did not want to fail in front of thousands. You come onto the forums just to state the game is already a failure and yet the game is not even out yet.

I will ask again, How can you see into the future to see that what you say is true and not just your opinion?

Just because the subscription numbers will tank after the first few months doesn't mean the game will fail. The game didn't need those subscriptions in the first place. The publisher will make money just from initial sales! They are adding in the subscription just to milk the gaming community. How much do you want to bet that their so called updates are a joke? I am talking below average for even a GW2 patch, which is FREE!

F2P is actually a better money maker than P2P so your logic makes no sense.

No, P2P is the best model for turning a profit in any Triple A MMO release. I am not sure how you got F2P > P2P out of that.

F2P = doubful income

P2P = stable income

If they are lucky the make more money with F2P in one months but in the next the dont even come close.

I hope you don't mean me

The Forum goers have already gone over this a million times in other threads, but basically F2P you have to buy everything, and whenever new stuff comes out you have to buy that too. With P2P it is $15 a month for pretty much everything except the odd expansion once or twice a year.

you still have yet to actually have any proof for your accusations other than your own opinion.

Many times a business wants a stable income instead of unpredictable spike income. LoTRO had plenty of subs to sustain it and make money yet still went ftp and is making more money than they were when it was p2p. It just isn't a stable consistent income. That is just one example.

I agree with you that the 50+ and 50++ is only a bandaid they made to the complaints here on the forums from them locking us out of other alliances.

we should be allowed to have freedom to go where we wish with no locking us out just like they claim we should have freedom to go where we wish and what we wish just exactly like the elderscrolls is famous for.

I agree with you.

that's a bad idea. if we make our wishes known to the developers then maybe we have a chance to have our wishes known and maybe theres a chance to have things changed.
