The Interface Isn't That Bad!

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 11:35 am

I don't get why everyone and their mum are b-[censored]ing about the interface. It really isn't that bad- sure you cant compare everything in one simple glance, or order the items by strength. You really don't need to, after the first couple hours you know what items are the best and which ones make you giddy with aesthetics. The skill menu is pretty, the spell menu is useless once you use 'Q' (the favourites menu). Honestly, the only screens I ever look at now are Enchanting, Smithing, Alchemy and Level-Up. They're fine- they do what they should do. Alchemy especially, is leagues over Oblivion.

Besides, are you really going to complain about the user interface when the gameplay.. well.. is beyond amazing? Yeah shaddap. :)

I understand the issues that have been brought up, but I wouldn't have come to the same conclusion if I had not read them previously. I don't have an issue with the interface, but could it be improved, yes. Will I download a mod when someone fixes it? For sure. That being said I don't think it is as bad as some people are making it, and it is completely tolerable until a mod.

One portion of the game being good doesn't justify another portion being bad. :spotted owl:

I understand, and I will download an interface mod (DarN I love you) when it is released. But, really, all this negativity over something that isn't even that bad. Why aren't there more topics about how wonderful the dragon's AI is? I haven't seen that in any other game. I guess the interface is more entertaining than dragons, right? :P

I find it annoying when playing as a mage, but I don't find it horrific.

Their complaints are valid, you are the one appearing whiny.

You can't justify wasting 3/4 of the [censored] screen to show a small 3d item, you just can't.

I'm not sure what it's like on consoles, but on the PC it's pretty awful. The complaints are definitely justified.

That said, it certainly isn't enough to ruin an otherwise great game. You do get used to it eventually...

I still don't know why people are complaining about this. Haven't read much into it and I haven't noticed anything negative. I am on the Xbox Version so I'm not sure if that counts for anything or not.

Shortened: "It looks purdy, it's better than Oblivion's, an' I don't use it anyway." Not a very stalwart defense.

Because the bad gets in the way of the good for a lot of people. And topics devoted to nothing but praise don't really make for interesting discussions.

Well, aside from the inefficiency of the actual UI design, should I just "stop whining" and live with the fact that the game seems blissfully unaware of my cursor's actual position half the time, frequently highlighting the wrong items, or preventing me from selecting subsequent inventory items without completely exiting and re-entering the inventory screen? Or the fact that hotkey functionality is sub-par at best, working unpredictably with dual-wield combos, and dropping hotkey assignments when I get disarmed in combat?

There are better things to focus on in Skyrim, don't you agree? :)

Well, if you use the interface the way it was designed (WSAD) you really won't have much of a problem. Honest.

It's fine with a controller on PC or console. With a m/k, it's junk. I don't care about the screen space or whatever, but getting to what you need with the m/k is ridiculous. I play with a controller and it's not bad, but m/k players are hosed on this one.

WASD? What, are we living in 1986, or something? Not to mention even with keys or even the console controllers, things don't work as they're intended. Going to the wrong node on the "perk star maps" happens too often on both. Is that good design?

It is nice, simple and easy to use, and honestly I don't see what is the problem with it.
But then again we can't say any good thing about this game or else we will get bashed like crazy, how dare we like this game!

I bet if you used WSAD instead of clicking, you'd find no problems :). I agree that the mouse is useless and needs to be fixed, but one simple change to something a little less efficient (DAH KEEYBOORD) and all your problems are gone? It's like a dragon shout, but for the UI!

I'm saying that there is constructive criticism for the UI, and then there are dual-wielding axe maniacs who hate the game because of the UI. Just look at the UI [WIP] thread that DarN is active in. What a great discussion! But otherwise, it makes me feel like I've been chopping onion.

Simply switch to the mouse on the perk screen. It works correctly :)! There's a work around for everything, baby!

Work-arounds only exist when there's a problem to be worked around in the first place. If the problem was fixed, it wouldn't need to be worked around. Is it really asking so much for a top-grade developer, which started as a PC developer, to remember that PC's have these wonderful things called mice, which allow for far more efficient navigation than flipping through lists like a Rolodex?

Soooo...wait a minute. First you say the menus are designed for WASD...but then go on to claim to use the mouse for the perks as a "workaround." Even under your own logic, the interface fails.

Second of all, UI mods or no UI mods, modders shouldn't have to fix what Bethesda's paid professionals [censored] up on.

The only thing that bothers me about the interface, is that you can't use your mouse properly to select items...
