The KOTOR II Appreciation Thread

Post » Wed Jul 18, 2012 2:56 am

So it happens that KOTOR II might be my all time favorite story. Ever. Anywhere. Of any video game, movie or heck, even book. I've completed the game something like 10 times, and I'm always in complete awe throughout. You who have played and completed the game, did you ever realize some of the following things, for example:

- just how big an impact player Revan really was, and why he did what he did
- why is Nihilus, an unstoppable planet-svcking force, so easy to beat?
- just who is this big crimelord, Goto, even if he's a bit dry and uninteresting?
- all things Kreia. She is my favorite fictional character ever (along with Vivec).
- why do you actually gain experienced points in this RPG?!

KOTOR II is really full of these "wtf?" moments first times through the game. You just don't know how things add up, and you think it's full of unfinished gaps in the story, and inconsistensies. The fact is, it's not. They all make sense story-wise if you pay close enough attention to them and can connect the dots! They're all part of the manuscript. This is unbelievable! In my opinion, head writer Chris Avellone and his team truly are genius beyond words! Heck, this game implicitely explains to you even purposes of some game-play mechanics, turns them into parts of the story! I'm completely amazed on how deep this RPG really is. If only the majority of its players and reviewers had the patience and time to dig deeper... I had. KOTOR fanboyism, that is.

I realize how Bioware has since screwed the whole story of KOTOR II, in their MMORPG, but I would rather not talk about it in this topic. I haven't even played TOR or read its prequel books myself, that is, only heard the horrible spoils in them. The internet is full of talk about this at the moment, I'd bet, so let's focus on appreaciating the most criminally underrated plot in gaming history that is KOTOR II!

http://lparchive.org/Knights-of-the-Old-Republic-II/ a colorfully written Let's Play that let me understand even more of the game, even though I had unlocked many of its mysteries on my own already. Better yet, it's also somewhere in SomethingAwful forums, where you can also see the numerous user replies to it. Unfortunately, nowadays you'd need to be registered to see it there, I think.

If you feel like it, use spoiler tags. I hope I haven't really spoiled anything... yet.

So, let's discuss about KOTOR II. Be my guests! ...I really hope that there are some of you here! :)

Unfortunately a lot of content had to be cut due to time, a-lot of it involving my favourite companion HK-47; at-least Atton's [censored] was fully completed, loved that guy. Obsidian are a brilliant team aren't they.

TAKE THE HINT BETHESDA.

I thought the tutorial level dragged for too long and was nowhere near as engaging as Taris, which dragged as well. Nar Shadda dragged as well. I enjoyed the rest of it immensley thouhg.

I thought the first one was far superior in story and character depth. Not sure what you're talking about.

Edit: I agree with JagarTharn12. I played an hour of Kotor 2 on Xbox when it first came out and then quit. I made myself beat it on PC a few months ago though, and enjoyed what wasn't the tutorial level.

Wow really. Not a fan of Pegasus but Taris lasted forever.

It had more interesting environments (all three of them), but it had a few sidequests and interesting NPCs. Pegasus had some robots and I didn't even know what the hell was going on.

I do love HK-47, though. Best character ever. The cut content videos with him make me sad. I wish you could have more than a 3 person party and ramp up the difficulty. Gotta have HK-47, but I always want 3 Jedi.

All I can remember about that game was how much the ending screamed out for a KOTOR III, but I never got one. I still have them both on my self, but they're pretty low on my list of awesome games.
BioWare, I dissapoint.

It's a shame so much content was cut and the ending was rushed, other than that it's a fantastic game.

Don't rush Obsidian games. That never ends well.
