The Listener

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 7:02 pm

I thought the Listener didn't take contracts. I remember from Oblivion that I as the Listener simply told the guild members the contracts and what they were suppose to do, and I'd get part of the cut. I know how awful and boring this sounds, but I don't ever remember Lucien Lachance going out and killing anyone either. I remember him being the one to leave contracts in drop zones. The Listener listens, The Keeper keeps, and the rest do. Something like that. As stated I know how incredibly boring most people think that is, but I was replaying the DB quest line and I was like, wait a minute what.

It would have been better if the DB quest had better quest for The Listener to do. The last time I checked it was The Listener who was in charge of recruitment. Remember Lucian Lachance appear in your hotel room and then cloak away? He did the recruiting. He left drop zones. I just think that becoming The Guild Leader of sorts would lead to better quest than, "Go kill this person like you have been this whole entire time"

I think it's mostly due to the fact that you're just starting out from basics again. You don't really have the infrastructure yet to really return to the Old Ways.

Pretty sure the Listener just delves out contracts to Speakers, who sen their agents to actually complete the missions.

As it stands, Nazir and Babette are really the only two Speakers the Dark Brotherhood has, and they're going to need time to rebuild and start doing things.

While I think there should be more varied and interesting quests for the Listener, I'd rather do generic murders for the Night Mother than nothing at all.

Well without killing Cicero you have:

Babette and Nazir as Speakers

Cicero as a Keeper

You as the Listener

And two new intiates.

I would think that some quest for The Listener would be, "The Night Mother heard of a man with a black heart, an old shadwoscale hiding in the dark" and then you go off and recruit them to the DB. That would be interesting. Instead of just kill this person, I mean we should get various quest from

-Kill this person to

-Recruit this person

Even maybe get into some politics too. Like The Thieves Guild has bought out Riften, why don't we have has a quest that allows us to use Dawnstar as our protector? Such as bribing or intimidating the Jarl, in the way that the guy in Chedyinhal had been threatened or made a contract with DB.

I think the quest after should be about the DBs expansion, not just kill this person.

Now that you have to kill as the Listener instead of just walking up to a statue, it does make things a bit more interesting.

I do too. Hopefully the option will come up down the line.

I also think you should have been able to save everyone in the Brotherhood (except maybe Astrid and Arnbjorn. I actually thought of a good way of doing it too. For every special condition of the contracts you fulfill )the ones that earn you a "bonus"), the person who gave you the job will be alive with half their health when you reach the Sanctuary. If you're fast enough, you can heal them.

The only ones not affected by this are Veezara (who would be covered under Bound Until Death) and Arnbjorn (who I think is better off dying to be with Astrid anyway).

Thoughts?

Personally, I find the DB quest line super linear. Why can't we investigate Astrid herself? Maybe instead of saving them through contracts, how about undercovering secrets of Astrid's and sharing them amongst the DB members you can trust. The ones who have gained your trust. Thus the will be aware of what to come next. I think the only person you wouldn't be able to convince is her husband no matter under any circumstance. "I like you, but I don't like youthat much, my wife wouldn't do something like that"

Like after you save Cicero, there should be a new quest line where Cicero gives you evidence against Astrid herself or something. Or Cicero comes up to you and tells you what he has uncovered. Even Lucian Lachance ghost states at some point that Cicero is the wrong person to look at. So, why aren't there more options to branch through the story?

Like when Astrid tells you to do this mindless random quest instead of going to the Volluun grave you should be able to either obey the Night Mother or obey Astrid's words.

You pretty much summed up all my feelings.

You can actually go to Volunruud before you do the contract and speak with Amaund, but you still have to do the contract before you can do anything else.

This. ^ I'm hoping an expansion will include more DB stuff. With the subject matter of Dawnguard and Babette maybe the DB and Dawnguard will cross paths?

Exactly! I wouldn't have killed Cicero if he had handled the situation like that.

That would be cool if Babette somehow came into play. I like her, especially early on in the story when she was talking about killing the pedophile.

Yeah, that monologue was hilarious.

I'm anti-vampire (across the board) and anti-child (in Bethesda games), but I might have to consider joining the vampire faction in the expansion if Babette is included somehow. :P

I just want more quests like the one in Oblivion where everyone thought there was treasure and you were sent to kill all of them and pick them all off one by one secretly or just go in like an axe swinging maniac!
