In the market for a new sound systemreceiver - suggestions?

So the time has come for me to be in the market for a new sound system/receiver. I bought a Logitech Z-5500 a few years ago and it's served me well but modern hardware is forcing me to consider an upgrade. What are the problems you ask? Well, problem 1) the receiver for the sound system is kind of lacking and only has an optical audio, coax & anolog inputs. And juggling multiple devices can get annoying. I used to have an optical audio switch for multiple inputs but it kind of died on me and never worked all that well (the sound would sometimes cut out for no reason).

The other problem is I got a Wii U and just got Arkham City Armored Edition and much to my surprise there was no dialogue. My general method for connecting devices to my sound system that don't have direct inputs for optical or anolog is to run it through my TV, then run my TV through to the sound system via optical. But that doesn't seem to work with the Wii U as it doesn't support Dolby Digital, so I can only run it with Stereo instead of surround sound.

So - I'm looking at either a 5.1 or 7.1 sound system. I do have a PC, PS3, 360, Wii, PS2 and Wii U that I game on and all have either HDMI or optical inputs minus the Wii of course which has component inputs that I run through the TV. I'm running this home theater system in a regular bedroom, nothing big or grand. What receiver/speaker combo would you guys recommend? Would you recommend I got with 7.1 or 5.1? I'm not looking for something overly expensive, something affordable. I'm planning on selling my current sound system for $300 or so (which is a fine system otherwise) so something in the $3-600 price range is preferable. I'm also not an audiophile. I just want something that sounds great for music/movies/games (when I'm not using my headset for gaming).
