Is the Mass Effect Trilogy any good?

Post » Mon Nov 05, 2012 7:13 am

The Mass Effect Trilogy pack comes out soon and I was wondering whether or not it would be worth purchasing. I haven't played any of the Mass Effect games before, except for the old one which I didn't really give a full-chance and instead just harshly criticised before giving the game to a family member. However, I absolutely love Bioware's games like Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age (even Dragon Age 2 believe it or not) with their amazing story-lines. Is this a good deal and should I buy it or just wait for Mass Effect 4 and join in with a new story-line and trilogy?

Just play the first two. ME3 has nothing new to offer in terms gameplay, and yes the ending is abysmal.

Everybody makes a big deal of the ending but it really is not that bad. The entire trilogy is fantastic and I do recommend it.

Yeah. The only area where the games fall flat on their face is the ME2 method of gaining resources, and ME3's ending.

They're good as a bundle, though.

Yes. Sure, the game mechanics vary by game, but the overall story and collection of characters is great (barring the last ten minutes ).

One thing about the trilogy set - stupidly, it doesn't include all the DLC you might want for the full story. (as with most DLC, some are just side quests, but others actually have some story connection. In particular, I'd say that the ME2 DLCs "Lair of the Shadowbroker" and "Arrival" are reasonably important. But you could put off any decision about those until halfway into ME2.)

ME1's world exploration was a giant pain in the rear, as the physics of everything was just bad. Didn't help a good portion of the game was on planetary roving, along with generic pirate holdouts.

ME3 had great gameplay. And the story bits aside from the ending were phenomenal. :ermm:
(which probably helped make the ending seem so bad, since it was such a shift from the rest of the game.)

Each of the games has its own issues, but overall they're all worth playing and it's a great story.

There was a lot of complaining about Mass Effect 3 because it had multiplayer (which turned out fine), a $10 day one DLC (which is annoying but doesn't make the game much worse) and a crappy ending (which was more or less dealt with) which lead to a lot of 'it is the worst game ever' nonsense even though it's still a decent game on its own.

Loved the first one. The second one was okay, but not as great as the first. Too much like a third person shooter and less of an RPG too me. I miss the Mako. Third one was just a third person story with a moderately okay story, however the ending makes the entire series pointless. So if you are okay with that concept then just play them. They are worth playing.

The first two were really good: I thoroughly recommend them. I think the first edged out the second in terms of atmosphere, but the second got away from the first's inventory management, which causes insanity.

Don't bother with the third, it's scientifically proven to cause leprosy.

Wasn't it, without spoiling it please, corrected through free DLC or something?

As far as I am aware without beating around the bush it's still [censored].

You know I liked at least having an inventory. I bet you got your IV's mixed up with your VII and your X stuck back with the III, I know, happens.

The bundle costs £40 GBP here in the UK, which equates to $65 USD.

Really? I swear that they did an "Extended Cut" thing or something that adds enough cut-scene. Was it really that bad though? All I heard was that it didn't offer the amount of closure that you'd want on characters other than Shepard?

No. It's still one of the stupidest things I have seen in my entire life. It really fixed nothing. Just added... well, it's stupid. There are a lot of plotholes.

Just get ME1 and ME2. Then imagine that's the end. Simple really xD

Well, endings aside then, is it worth the money still?

I'd say yeah. Just for the sake of your sanity avoid the third game.

Usually complaints over games endings are greatly exaggerated. Reviews criticised Dishonored for a shallow plot, but I found it pretty good - certainly no worse than any other game.

Yeah. The endings attracted a huge amount of criticism but the third game in general wasn't that great. It wasn't crap, but it was obviously rushed and the general "vibe" seemed slightly off.

I would say the first 2 were great games. I haven't played the 3rd yet. I liked the 2nd more than the 3rd.

Yeah, the uber hate for ME3 and it's ending is overdone. Yes, the ending svcked. But the rest of the game was amazing, and the ending (while poor, and loaded with plot holes, and unsatisfying) wasn't worth the frothing rage that took over the net for the month after release.

(Kind of like the uber-hate for DA2 is overdone. Yeah, it's not as good as the first game. But it isn't the crime against humanity that you'll hear from most people.)

The first was great, the second was good. Did some things better, some things worse. I was a little upset because my favourite class (adept) was nearly beaten to death with the nerf-bat, but it was still very enjoyable. Never bothered with the third (in no small part due to poor reviews) but it's probably pretty fun as well.

My issue with the ending DLC, aside from the plotholes and stupid. Was that it felt less of an ending and more of a group of writers in a room with 3 minutes saying 'right, what do we write?' cobbled together whatever rubbish and spewed it out. Hearing that there is going to be a ME4 just makes me resigned. If they want to milk it fine, but I'll not be buying.
