The mindsets of some online gamers...

Post » Mon Oct 15, 2012 12:00 pm

I've stumbled on some videos over the last several months where people would humiliate and mess with "campers" in Battlefield 3. The thing is, these people go to such incredible lengths to do so. They'll plant the maximum amount of remote charges around the sniper, bomb his position, and even fly a fighter jet directly ontop of him, sacrificing the jet in the process. All of this because "that stupid camping [censored] wasn't contributing to their team."

And I've had it. I don't even play BF3 or any of these shooters, but this mindset makes me want to vomit in disgust. Many of these people are clearly doing this for YouTube popularity, which makes it even worse. How is wasting a jet or charges, and just focusing on one single person contributing to your team? And whenever the issue is brought up with them, they say "chill out, it's just a game."

"Just a game." This is the response these people have. The people who make such a gigantic deal out of "camping snipers" that they're willing to kamikaze a plane into them out of sheer vengeance and anger. Just because they don't like them. It's completely lacking in logic. It's hypocritical and absurd, and it only reinforces my desire to stay the [censored] away from online shooters.

What are your thoughts? I know I'm probably letting it get to me too much, and it shouldn't, but it just does. It's a big reason why I'm so frustrated with gaming lately. It's not just the industry and the companies who publish the games, but the players also contribute to my rapidly dwindling faith I once had in this little hobby of mine.

When will the stupidity end? Will it ever? I need to go punch something.

It's just a game, as you said in your paragraph of text. Have fun... Some people have fun differently then others, whether or not their type of fun is socially acceptable is up to the companies who make said games

Makes me wonder how many snipers had a jet plane crash into them IRL :P

But killing people in ridiculous ways is fun.
Like parking aircraft carriers right beside each other in 1942.

I've completely lost hope in online shooters and find multiplayer in general just tedious and frustrating. I'd rather play against computers, preferably in an open-world with areas that lack action.

It's just a game

Which is true, but when it gets to the point where people are up in arms about something as stupid as a "camping" sniper, and make it some kind of project to weed them out, then they have no right to fling that phrase around. It's not "just a game" to these people. Often, it's their YouTube livelihood, their popularity, their so-called "pride". There's playing a game and treating it as such..and then there's just being a dike. I would never want to take part in a game where people do this kind of crap, where it ceases being a game for them because their K:D and dignity is at stake. And consequently, it ceases being a game for me because their [censored] interferes with my own fun, and I end up regretting ever playing in the first place. They think they're improving the gaming experience by messing with the "campers", but in the end, all they're doing is contributing to the stupidity.

These people go on about realistic games then don't realise that snipers generally do "camp",take a shot and move. They are doing a strategy for kills, I don't see how it matters, surely contributing to the team in some way is better than not at all.

For instance, I used to play BF1943 back when I had my 360. I'd snipe from the carriers (with some success) and shoot down enemy planes with the AA guns whenever they got in range. And I would rake in a ton of kills from doing this, despite only occasionally hitting my mark. Why was that? Because buttfrustrated players would hop into a plane, fly over to the carrier and parachute out with the intention of taking me down. Most of the time, they'd fail and I'd get an easy kill.

I don't understand that at all. Whenever I got fragged by someone across the map, I didn't swear vengeance upon their soul and hunt them down for the remainder of the match. But that's what they did, and I'd end a lot of my sessions with one of the top spots on the post-game rankings. I [censored] svcked at that game, but people got so mad at me for being a "camping noob" that they'd blindly come after me, ignoring their team.

It just...boggles my mind. :bonk:

When I played BF2 online I got very good at digging in with the Support kit. I'd find myself a rooftop and set up shop. I got so good sniping with the M240 SAW that the other team would ignore my team and hunt me down. Eventually I had to employ the aid of snipers to help me protect myself. I'd drop ammo packs for their claymores. So, I can understand why people get upset.

But in the case of a sniper, that's his job. Is to camp. It's also the job of someone who is playing support to support his team by laying down covering fire and suppressing the other team. In my case I was sniping the other team from across the map using the SAW I was clearly not using the kit correctly. Eventually my tactics changed and I stopped "camping".

When you just [censored] around though you ruin it for everyone else on your team.

If you think the people on BF are bad than you'd be scarred for life by COD.

Honestly, I'd mark that one up to a flaw with the game itself, and wouldn't fault you for it. It made sense that the enemy team went after you, since you were the biggest threat in that situation. What I don't like is when a scout is targeted by another player exclusively, separate from the combat zones, and does everything but launch a nuke on his location. In that scenario, that player is being just as wasteful as the person he has the problem with.

Aren't snipers supposed to... camp?

Some online gamers are beyond stupid, and that's why I don't play a lot of multiplayer in shooters anymore. People [censored] about their opponents camping or doing other [censored], and then they proceed to take revenge by disregarding the objective and their own team. It's just silly, and it ruins the fun for everyone.

One of the greatest threats a sniper can employ is psychological - they demoralise the enemy disproportionate to their actual combat effectiveness. This qualifies.

Agreed
these games aren't very realistic
It takes around half a magazine to waste someone when in real life it takes one precise shot.
If it were realistic, just about everyone would eventually get too frustrated with these games.

The most competitive online game I play is TF2, otherwise co-op like L4D or Killing Floor or an MMO like Guild Wars 2 for me.

Not sure I understand this post. Your angry that they claim they don't take things seriously when really they do? (Or in your opinion they do)
Is that right or have I missed the point? :P

I enjoyed Sniping in TF2 on Payload maps where it was basically impossibru for an enemy to come at me bro when I had a good team. No Spies or Scoots getting past and enemy Snipers didn't have much of a chance. Oh the rage they must have felt, glorious.

People don't seem to like Snipers. Except other Snipers, we get totally jelly and get mancrushes on other Snipers.

Uh-uh. He ain't joking, homegirl. My sister plays mutiple shooter games online and she either gets sixually harrassed or threatened because she's a girl gamer [and supposedly that makes her useless.]

If you want to see 21st century thoughts on racism, sixism and what-not. Play MW online.

No, i have heard it before. It isn't limited to females either.

Had a few death threats myself. Not sure how serious the person threatening me was but they sure sounded serious lol. They always get mad when you do really well. Then when they make up excuses and you call them on their [censored] and they then get really mad. It is amazingly pathetic. It is one thing to have an insult exchange with other gamers(if they are giving it back) but quite another to actually get so mad at someone over a game that they cannot form coherent sentences.

I remember running and gunning(I only camp when I am sniping, even then I was often jumping camping spots) and getting 4 nukes in 4 games(CoD MW2). Some guy got so mad about this he started yelling at me and talking all kinds of crap. I responded. He started getting more mad. I muted him after realizing what an idiot he was. He then PMed me this long series of messages detailing how he was gonna hunt me and my family down. I never said anything to him to elicit that response.

Some people are just unstable.
