When i was a kid and younger advlt, and many people of other ages as well, enjoyed Sandlers "happy gilmore" and "billy madison" characters of comedy. It was lowbrow and fairly cheap humor, but very enjoyable.
Of course you can't expect some one as successful as Adam Sandler to simply put up with being the essential hilarious screw up comedian, so it made sense that he would move on to different types of comedy roles. Such as 50 first dates and what ever that movie was where he inherited a corporation, which were ok movies.
Then his movies started to go down hill, "click" and "funny people" specifically. i am not presumptuous to say that no one enjoyed those movies, but generally i fell as though most people would agree that those two movies were more awkward and depressing than funny.
from this point it seems to me that Sandler or his agents recognized that his image was not exactly turning out to what ever it was that they were expecting to convey with those roles, and proceed to force him into cliche and over used roles. ie romantic comedies (like the switch up or what ever that movie was called) and dressing in drag while acting ridiculous.
The one where he was dressing in drag was actually what caused me to think this much about adam sandlers career (and i assure all who read this, i have lost sleep thinking about all of this) because after seeing the trailer for it I thought to my self "my god what is he doing to his career?"
Now, we see a movie that appears to put sandler back into his old archetype of the "madison"/"gilmore" comedian. Which i have no doubt will be funny, but i wonder if its what adam sandler actually wants to do?
Personally im hoping that he finds a way to take his early comedy and craft it into something new that does not force him to work a career of self depreciating humor.
