I saw in the new year listening to Tera Melos' http://teramelos.bandcamp.com/track/a-spoonful-of-slurry on Vinyl. I wouldn't've wanted anything else.

Neil Young may not be able to sing to save himself
I happen to quite like Mr. Young's voice. I'd describe it as homely.

Of course I'm joking, who can deny the power of Hall & Oates and Rick James?

So I got over a 100 quids worth of music for Christmas, as well as a book called "1001 albums you must hear before you die"... This only had one logical conclusion really; here's what I've bought so far (still got loads of voucher left!):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0b_IHjWXbuM (indie)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDdbiKQTE-w (electronic)

So yeah, any other recommendations?

Something a bit more recent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWJ5733vbFA. Dat vocoder

I'm a big fan of Neil Young. An artist's voice doesn't have to be perfect; take Bob Dylan for instance, he can't sing for toffee, but boy can he write a tune. One of my favourite Neil Young tracks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=221mohEolWc

Found these guys last night on a random YouTube jaunt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSNHofCE4rg

Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, and Bryce Dessner (of The National) composed some songs about the planets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-kiFfHkwkg (my favorite). A fairly listenable live recording can be http://www.mediafire.com/?5m0xp9aj6lgod1o for non-youtube listening. Really hope they'll bring the tour to the US.

It's great. I'm a complete [censored] and can never get through an entire rap album in one sitting but I'm really digging it regardless.

ALL THIS METH GOT ME OPEN LIKE FALLOPIAN TUBES.

One always has to wonder why people continue to [censored] with the Wu-Tang Clan, they've made their position on the matter clear many times.

I used to like what Sufjan Stevens did. I have Avalanche and Greetings from Michigan, but I've gone right off him now. It all got a bit same same to me, and some of the lyrics made him too preachy for me. I still like those two albums though.

It's great.

I really liked 8 Diagrams you should give it a listen. It's not as raw as 36 Chambers and sadly, it lacks Dirt McGirt. But there is a heartfelt tribute to him at the end.

Age of Adz sounds the same as Seven Swans to you? Not to mention his orchestral score for the BQE. Different strokes, I suppose.

P.S. You've got the Avalanche and not Illinois? You gotta fix that, man!

I'm not familiar with those works. I can't recall when I decided to stop listening to his work, so I'm perfectly happy to accept your criticism with regard to him changing his sound. I did have Illinois at one point (I'm not sure if it was my copy though), and that was also a good album (were'nt some of the tracks the same on those two albums?), but it's nowhere to be found now. So which one would you recommend that demonstrates a new direction for him? I'll check it out and see if I agree with what you're saying.

The Avalanche is an outtake/b-side album of tracks that didn't make it on Illinois. There are a few more versions of Chicago on there.

Age of Adz is all straight electronic, barely any acoustic instruments (except for the first track and the last section of the last track - it's book-ended with standard Sufjan-sounding songs). If you like that type of thing, give it a listen. Although, I can tell you I didn't enjoy the album at first, it took me a while to get used to the sounds.
