To the Naysayers: THANK YOU!

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 7:59 am

With all the negative threads about how Skyrim is such a big fail, I went in with low expectations. I was expecting a horrid pc interface, underpowered magic system, svcky graphics, etc. and was pleasantly surprised. Not only wasn't I bothered by these "issues", but I have loved every minute of the game, and already consider it to be the best game I've ever played, period. It is the most beautiful game I've ever played graphically (everything is on ultra), the sound is incredible, and the gameplay itself is outstanding. So much better than Oblivion in every way, and I'm enjoying it even more than Morrowind, Fallout 3, and all the other great games I've played over the years.

Better to go in with low expectations and be blown away by just how good it all is, so again...thanks to the naysayers for setting me up for such a great gaming experience :)

Oddly enough, I was just commenting to my wife (who games with me) that I'd gone into Skyrim with INCREDIBLY, ABSURDLY, UNREALISTICALLY high expectations, and so far, it's blown those away. Which... is amazing to me really.

In all honesty the responses in the forums are actually overwhelmingly good. Few people claim that this game is bad. Most simply complain about valid issues that could have made this game even greater... You obviously were not part of the insane flaming / insulting / doom saying Dragon Age 2 faced. THAT was serious disappointment ^^

The complainers and naysayers are a vocal (and often extremely rude) minority. Skyrim is a good game -- one that I'm sure to be playing for years to come, as is the case with almost every Elder Scrolls game.

Unfortunately, I didn't follow the forums for Dragon Age 2, went in with high expectations, and experienced the justified disappointment firsthand :(

I did think there was a large number of negative threads on Skyrim before I got to play, and glancing through the forum these threads still abound. I can understand wanting to improve certain issues, but what I don't get are the catastrophic proclamations about how the game as a whole is a huge disappointment, that people shouldn't buy it, etc.

Like I said, despite the nitpicks, Skyrim is the best game I've every played and I look forward to enjoying it for years.

It was the same with Oblivion. The 1% that are never satisfied because it deviates too much from Morrowind or some such nonsense are always here. They get off to blowing things out of proportion. Skyrim is an excellent game. The best I have ever played? So far, yes, very much so

If you are a TRUE member of this forum then you love the game....just kidding. You can hate the game it's your opinion. By the way I love the game too and for the first time no troubles on the PS3 I'm pretty happy.

I'd have to agree with AoX--since release, I've seen approximately 5 "omg dis gam sux" threads, written with varying degrees of grammar and intellect.

That being said, that's a [Nummit] incredibly low number of hate on the internet. Ever been to the Minecraft forums? You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy...

Plus, considering how 3/5 of those threads were "omg iv ben starihng @ di wal 4 lik 3 minudtsa ad haz ub3r luw texur wtf" and "The PC UI needs some work...", it really shows that the actual Gameplay is incredible enough to be mostly troll-proof.

OP I have no idea what are you talking about, cause there is almost NO immense QQ here about the game. Yeah, sure some people are complaining about PC interface, or this and that, but overall, there was no [censored]storm of whining and QQ for this game, it's good, there is no reason to complain like an idiot this time around.

EDIT: Which is actually kinda wierd, I'm USED to hearing whining everywhere,on every game forum no matter what, this doesn't feel right. :D

If you go to any forum for any game ever released in the history of games ever you will find it is full of complaining at least for the first few weeks after release.

Exactly.

I'm pretty impressed with the small amount of complaints here. There's always a few.

That's what happens when a developer takes a popular, old school style strategy RPG and makes it's sequel into an action oriented, hack-and-slash button masher with RPG elements thrown in. DA2 wasn't a bad game in and of itself, but what made people mad was that the developer took what a lot of people loved about the first game and just completely changed it or threw it away entirely. Peoples outrage over DA2 was completely justified in my opinion.

As for Skyrim, luckily Bethesda has kept with the successful formula of wide open gameplay, anonymous player characters, and interesting combat/magic mechanics. Like others have said there will be people who wont like the game no matter what is done with it, and there will be people who have genuine complaint that will use the forums more than the many people who are happy with the game. Even the best, most popular games out there will have large numbers of people who will not like the game for one reason or another. Not much one can do about it.

I'm one of those "naysayers" so allow me to put it into perspective.

The reason there is a vocal minority not happy with the game is partly because this is TES. THIS IS IT. We've seen all the "spiritual successors to Baldurs Gate" and such fall by the wayside as generic, dumbed down crap. TES RPGs are pretty much the last bastion of meaningful RPG experiences left out there that we are familiar with. Everything else is headed down the Diablo/WoW path which isn't for everyone.

Keeping that in mind, we have high expectations of a game like this. We also have every confidence in Bethesda (or had) because this isn't NEW for them. They've done all the things we expect of them in previous games and damn it if they didn't do a brilliant job of it. Which is why when the [censored] up the magic system and release a buggy UI (you couldn't even click in the menus at launch...) it's disappointing. When they axe entire schools of magic from the game and remove a ton of flavour-based spells from the game (feather/water walking/spell reflect/absorb health etc etc etc) for no good reason, it frustrates us.

To add insult to injury, when the boards are full of people who seem to have reading comprehension issues who say "hurr hurr lern2play noob", I say people like you have no right to be playing TES games in the first place. Go back to Maple Story.

The entire point of a sandbox RPG is that you are able to play however the hell you feel like playing it and have a damned good time doing it. When they pigeon-hole you into playing a certain role (ME BIG WARRIOR GUY I SMASH HAHA U MAGE U IS [censored]), this goes against everything these games stand for...and that pisses us off.

If you are enjoying yourself...good? But those of us who knew Bethesda could have done a much better job are just disappointed when we see the results of their half assedness.

I also love it. Don't understand the complaints at all. One thing I have noticed in some of the negative threads, though, is that some of the nay sayers already have at least one lvl 30 + character. That's a whole lot of game play already for a game they aren't happy with :)

I am playing a high elf mage and am experimenting with all sorts of stuff. I don't have to have the perfect char on the first play through. I imagine it will be a bit like my experience with Oblivion. Play through two will be much different. And on three I will be the demi-God that I wished I was on number one. The whole range of experience makes coming back that much more fun. :D

It could have been better, but that can be said for any game from many different perspectives, the marriage system in Skyrim might as well not exist because it's shallower than a rain puddle, the rain and snow clipping need to be addressed, these are my only real gripes, but none of these things have prevented me enjoying the game so far, traveling the roads while a snow blizzard blinds you is amazing, the side quests are not amazing but they are interesting, despite my gripes I'm unable to put the game down.

Suggesting that anyone expressing a negative opinion about the game is trolling?

Skyrim actually turned out to be pretty much exactly what I expected it to be. Both the good and the bad. Yes, there are flaws and faults to the game. Anyone who says that it's perfect are not much better than the trolls saying it's a terrible game.

I think all the vocal naysayers are used to BioWare games and think the universe evolves around them... as every BioWare game would have them believe.
So obviously they are going to be vocal because they think their real life dialogue options and renegade interrupts will actually change the nature of things.
