Hi. I am playing on PC, no mods, only Dawnguard. The game is patched to the latest version.

I got the courir to come to me, and he even said here is the note, but the note did not appear in my inventory. Is there a way to fix this bug*questionmark* Or a way to start it manually*questionmark*

Did you look in your 'Books' inventory? Sorry to ask, but I didn't look there the first time I played. Anyway, try just going to Falkreath and talking to the Jarl, it may start. I have not heard about this bug before.

And which note are you looking for? There's more than one that might appear, depending on whether you have a house, whether you're friendly with a certain jarl, and whether Grelod is dead or not.

I am looking in the books section. I see no new note there.

I did try going to the Jarls of Falkreath and Morthal. Both them and their stewards had nothing new to say to me. It's odd.

If you have the unofficial patch installed is it the new version that is compatible with Hearthfire? After you downloaded Hearthfire did you restart the game if you already had it loaded? Another thing you could try is verifying the cache, that clears up some problems.

Okay, evidently some black magic was at work. I verified the game files, and reloaded a save from very long ago. It worked then.

Now the problem is: how do I restart the quest at where I am currently in the game? Can I do this via a console command? I'd hate to do 150 hours of gameplay again just for Hearthfire...

I did get it to restart at where I am in the game...however it doesn't work now! It only works on previous save games! **table flip** l___l

You just wait for the courier or go to Morthal or Dawnstar yourself, you only need to do the quests for the Jarl you would normally do as part of your Thane quests. yYu do the help the people ones at the same time you can also become thane and get your housecarl, as well as the land. You have to be level 22 to do the second Dawnstart quest which is killing the giant.

Why did you just not load the save game you were trying it with first?

No no no, the courir DOES come. He does talk to me. In the corner of the screen it says (items) added. The only difference is: on the old save game the note actually shows up in my inventory, and the quest starts properly. On the new save game about a 100 hours later, it does not.

Also in the new save where it doesn't work he doesn't say "moving up in the world?"

If you have verified the files it should now appear on the later save as well, if you still have the same save file you loaded before the courier appeared.

When I first got Hearthfire, I tried it out with an old character, and had nothing but trouble. When I started a new character, everything worked fine. So you may have to start a new character.

Well that's bad news, since it's my existing characters that I want Heartfire for.
