Am I the only one that finds the lighting terrible?

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 1:47 am

I can't be the only one experiencing it: seemingly spontaneous moments where the lighting almost completely disappears. Happens when turning, when walking, whilst on fire, et cetera, et cetera...

I have the brightness as high as I can crank it, yet I still have some moments -- far, far too many -- when the screen goes pitch black. For me, it is annoying, takes away from the experience, and serves no discernible purpose outside of forcing me to stand around for 2-3 seconds semi-regularly so I can get some sort of bearing on what exactly I'm looking at.

If this is the price of having darker darks and lighter lights, it's simply not worth it. At all. I'd rather have less dramatic, less organic lighting if it afforded me a reprieve from this.

What say you?

Torches and spells help in the darkness and why not use game options to change lighting and if that isn't good enough change t.v./monitor lighting settings?

I have had no problems with lighting. Is it only when you're in dark dungeons, etc. or is it too dark all the time? Assuming you have raised the brightness both in game and on your tv, you shouldn't have a problem. I've found that the lightning is perfect on some tvs, but can be completely different on others, so I don't think the problem is actually within the game.

I believe they are attempting to simulate the effect of your eyes having to adjust to the dark, or vice versa.....

Occasionally its annoying, but its a cool effect in certain situations.

In-game, I have the brightness set as high as it will go. On my TV, it's set to 75 (on a scale of 0-100.) If I set it much higher, the image begins to lose its depth. The issue is not the individual brightness, but the complete range of the brightness. The entire image can go way too far into the darks, and it does it way too often for me to ignore it. I can be in a decently well lit room, have a candle in what would be my character's peripheral vision, turn away from it, and have to deal with 2-3 seconds of almost complete darkness before I can see anything again. I really, really wish it wouldn't do this.

I figured this is the case. If so, it's too dramatic and happens far too easily. I don't know about you, but even when I stare directly into a light, and turn away from it, I don't go blind for 2-to-3 seconds. And, honestly, I could see something like this working in, say, a horror game, but it just doesn't have a place here. It's annoying, it's impeding, and I don't find it ambient, interesting, or fun.

EDIT: I would also like to add that, for whatever reason, the issue isn't nearly as prevalent outside as it is inside. I'm guessing it's because of the lack of ambient lighting?

I've had the same thing happen, and came to the same assumption, that they are trying to simulate overstimulation of the eye. The issue I run into is that sometimes it happens at odd moments. I could be walking down a well lit corridor, and creep close to a wall that happens to be darker, and suddenly the screen blacks out and things come back into view. Yesterday I was in the mountains during the day, and i turned away from the sun to look towards what I thought was a dragon. The horizon cause my screen to flash white before everything came back into view.

A cool effect if it was intended, but the scripting is a little off sometimes.

Agreed, it's more of a pita than a cool effect. Mostly due to exactly the same situations you all described.

I can appreciate it when I'm walking out of a dark cave toward the light coming in the entrance or when walking out of a dark corner into the light. But when it happens because the game thinks my face got close enough to the wall to block all the light in a well lit hallway so I'm temporarily blinded is annoying as hell. The worst though is when it happens in combat, usually due to being set ablaze in a dark room.

Basically it would be a welcome effect if it wasn't soo over exaggerated.

Yup. It was giving me particular issue against mages as well. I get tagged by one and have no idea what is in front of me until my characters "eyes" adjust.

Ok, I'm relieved its not just me or my TV and it's actually the game... lol....

This is THE biggest annoyance for me in this game, and it almost (almost.. lol) ruins the entire game for me. The process they use is very flawed as far as I can tell because there will be times when I literally cannot see hardly anything, and while that might be all fine an dandy for a super dark cave or whatnot, it's very annoying when I need to crank up the brightness just so I can see whats around me when this effect refuses to adjust properly.

Also, does anyone else HATE when a dragon flash fries you with flame that you are totally blinded for 2-4 seconds? Sure, the idea might be cool but dang... it just svcks in how its implemented IMO. For the longest time I honestly thought it was my recently purchased 24" HDTV and it was seriously faulty.
