By the time you return, if you manage to survive planetary devastating force and exiting/entering atmosphere, he's taken the form of the Ultra Mega Badass Dragon Of Pure Energy And Roflstomping.
He then devours your soul by accident, thus solidifying his rule as Ultra Emperor of Existence.

He was never going to be able to leave, it was all a hoax by Mora as seen by the large hole in Miraak's chest.

lol, because my vampire character will for eternity swing by every once in a while and destroy his obelisks, the earth stone seems to be the only one he can keep going.

two things are for sure, miraak is neither dead nor alive at this point. but somewhere inbetween. and he is trapped in a plane with a deadric prince who wants him dead. only by entering the realm can we discover whether he is alive or dead, but until then his 'life' remains a variable in his whole plot to return to tamriel.
