The Problem With Combat is. . .

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 5:12 am

Is the fluidity itself. Sometimes, I feel like (Especially when I'm fighting alongside friends) that we're ice skating, floating around the battlefield. Allies constantly attack one another by accident, bumping into each other, because everything's so fluid. The flexibility is nice, but it has drawbacks.

I find that in games with great combat, combat-movement is far less fluid, it's more about steps and leaps. It's more tactical as a result. It allows for dodges and counters. It's more realistic as well. To swing a sword or battle-axe you need good footing. I think when the sword is drawn, the whole system of movement ought to be changed. Any thoughts?

Self bumping is a no-no

My opinion is that combat currently captures the desperate insane craziness of group melee. Enemies and allies getting in the way of your swings (especially when they're wild) is part of the package. I think its great the way it is.

There should be a fractional pause as the weapon is swung, but other than that I see no reason alter movement mechanics as soon as the weapon is dawn unless you're using a shield; in which case the necessity of maintaining a defensive stance would obviously hinder movement.

That being said, it is entirely possible to swing a weapon at full power while moving forwards without losing balance. Doing the same thing while moving backwards or sideways though would be far more difficult.
