The Stat Skill Tree

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 5:48 pm

Currently we have a very simple "on level up" upgrade to the basic resources of Magicka, Health, and Stamina.

However, what if we created a Skill Tree in conjunction, or even to replace, that simple system?

Let's get started.

/////////////////////////////////////

We could do it in a couple of ways. Either go with the standard skill level requirement, although skill level would be replaced by character level, or setting the requirement via the actual stat that the Perk will be based on. For example, you would need 150 Health to unlock the next Health Perk.

Why are we doing this in the first place? To flesh out your character a bit more dynamically, if you so desire. We'll go with the assumption that none of the other Skill Trees or Perks will be changed with this discussion.

/////////////////////////////////////

I personally like the idea of making this Skill Tree be based on character level, at every 10 levels you would get to the opportunity to place a point in this tree rather than one of the other Skill Trees. This means you won't be able to touch this tree at all until level 10, unless the very first Perk is automatically unlocked, which I will use in my example. Furthermore, you could not take a Perk for a level you have a Perk already in, meaning you could not take two or all three Perks for level 10.

/////////////////////////////////////

The Skill Tree would fan out from one point into three different branches; Magicka, Health, Stamina.

The very first Perk would be general like so:

Level 1: Abled Body | Upon every level up you gain +5 to (Magicka, Health, or Stamina).

This Perk would go into effect regardless of what you actually choose to level up, so for example if you choose Health for the Perk, and then when you reach level 2 you choose to upgrade Stamina, Health would still receive a +5 bonus. If this would potentially make things too powerful, the Perk could be changed to ever 2, 3, 5, etc levels instead.

Then from there the Skill Tree would branch out to Magicka, Health, and Stamina and could look something like this:

Level 10

Magicka: Uplifted Spirit | Magicka regenerates at a faster rate the healthier you are. Gain +1% Magicka Regeneration for every 50 Health you have.

Health: Stout Heart | Health becomes fortified the more vibrant you are. Gain +5 Maximum Health for every 50 Stamina you have.

Stamina: Full of Energy | Stamina regenerates at a faster rate the more energy you have. Gain +1% Stamina Regeneration for every 50 Magicka you have.

More to come. Discuss this for now :)

Actually, I would rather just go back to the Attributes/Skills system of the previous two games.
