Is the Thieves Guild as evil as the Dark Brotherhood?

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 9:42 am

I've been doing the thieves guild quests on my newer character and I've noticed they seem to be more evil than Oblivion's guild. In Oblivion, the thieve's guild at least helped out beggars and the poor folk but in Skyrim they are all greedy bastards who are just in it for themselves. They put perfectly innocent people out of business, interrogate people or destroy their belongings if they don't pay them debts, and from what I know so far they don't do anything about the poverty in Riften but just make the problem worse. Now I know Oblivion's guild was evil too but the quests were mainly heists involving the stealing of artifacts. In Skyrim they're much harsher. They're ultimate goal is too pretty much make themselves feared throughout the 9 holds and rule the cities as well as making tons of gold from the misery of others.

I've only done about 3 quests for the guild so correct me if I'm wrong and if they do get better but those are my first impressions of the guild. I usually don't like playing pure evil characters. So yeah, what do you think? Are they pure criminal scum or do they hold any bit of kindness in their hearts?

They definetly get better throughout the questline. Anyone who complains about being forced to be a bit evil shouldn't play this game if we constantly get these threads.

I don't mind being a bit evil, I just refuse to do the dark brotherhood questline because I don't wanna kill narfi ;_;

I miss Oblivion's thieves guild. It was far more "Robin Hood" like and less dark gray zone, like Skyrim's guild is. They still hold the "no killing" rule for the most part though, so I don't see them as evil. Just greedy. The Nightingales have a code of honor though...generally.

I'm hoping for a mod that inserts a "good guy" type guild, in the future. None of the guilds really fit my playing style. Even an Assassin's Creed type guild would work for me, since that's not entirely evil. After all, their targets deserve it. Maybe a counter to the Brotherhood...

You do realize this Thieves Guild is nearly disbanded? They are in hard times so they can't be good or else they'd fall apart. Would you expect a company that was nearly bankrupt to just give away millions to charity? No, you wouldn't. Honestly, you people would hate playing Overlord 2

Thieves guild is more evil. The DB I just assassinated individuals, and a bunch of guards on a ship. The thieves guild, I wiped out two estates.

This may be in response to people hating on robinhood thieves.

And also, grim realism.

I kill the nasty old lady who terrorizes the poor orphans. Then I kill Astrid and wipe out the DB in Skyrim. I won't touch the TG in this game at all. I loved the "Robin Hood-ish" Oblivion version, but I have no clue what the devs were smoking to come up with the current game's TG. Eww.

So all the killing & looting for supremacy in politics is not evil, but killing & stealing for bread & butter on table is.

They aren't robin hoodish like the ob theives guild, but they seem more like what a thives guild would actually be like, they feel really mobish

*shrug* I will always prefer the Oblivion version. Others of course are perfectly free to choose their own poison. That's the really good thing about a SPMR game....

Thieves Guild isn't as evil as the Dark Brotherhood. Thieves Guild actually ends up progressing towards the neutral/Good meter, I don't see how the Dark Brotherhood is less evil especially the high target contract that you get to fullfill.

Actually, the TG is (even in its current incarnation) nothing like the mob IRL. And for TG background in fantasy fiction, there are a lot of good books that tend to support a "not really the evil side" attitude. Beginning with Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, going on to Sanctuary, and various other books/series....

I repeat.... TG in Skyrim is NOTHING like the mob. Yes, I know whereof I speak. I BABYSAT for the mob in a city of renown. The TG in this game is just a bunch of numb-nuts compared.

It actually ruined any immersion I had for the group because I couldn't imagine my Dragonborn wanting to have anything to do with such a set of penny ante thugs. I was annoyed there was no, "Destroy Thieves Guild" option.

QFT. I spend a goodly amount of time "undoing" the DB. I'd LOVE to do the same for the TG in this game. Well.... the modders will likely fix it for those of us on PC....

For my thief character, she went straight to Riften after leaving Riverwood, so she doesn't know she's the Dragonborn yet, and may not ever find out. She came to Skyrim to be a thief, and doesn't really care if Whiterun gets eaten by a dragon. She's enjoying the Thieves Guild quite a bit.

It's part of the reason I think people needed to adjust their viewpoint when they complain about certain quests making them feel evil. Unless your character is completely insane, it's highly unlikely he's going to do EVERY SINGLE QUEST for every single faction. Skyrim seems designed for multiple playthroughs if you actually enjoy any form of roleplaying versus simple gameplay (which isn't wrong).

This is very true, and actually is quintessentially TES. Some of us won't ever do the "evil" stuff - but it's not a bad thing that it's there for those who have no issues RPing it.

No, it's not. *sigh* The mob is a worldwide organization of serious criminals, with fingers everywhere from the oriental laundry in Honolulu to the Winter Palace's kitchen in St Petersburg. The TG in Skyrim is a loose conglomeration of every slimy two-bit creep who thinks he's pegged "evil" simply because he reads porm by candlelight in the sewers of Riften.

The Soprano's mafia, maybe. The thieves guild at the start of the game is really pathetic. Brynwulf is hocking watered down potions of healings for crying out loud.

That's known as snake oil. If you need a definition, dictionary.com can help with that.
