The 5 Things I Hope to See (Developer cookies included!)

Post » Sun Oct 27, 2013 10:18 pm

Hello! So, I thought I'd post my measly suggestions for the Elder Scrolls Online. I'd heard somewhere that the developers take feedback from these forums. *Gestures to a fantastic plate of chocolate chip cookies.* If not, then I suppose that I'm mostly musing out loud. I'd offer more, but really, almost anything I could hope for has already been added to the game. So I'll go ahead and post my 5 cents here. They very well might be terrible, but hey, why not? Here goes!

1. Scale does not always equate to sheer awesomeness.

It drives me a little crazy when MMO's will take regular mobs instance art, will scale it to be 120% bigger, and then slap it into a zone for raid content and label it as sheer amazing. Awe should be inspired. I think what makes a zone amazing is by the boss scripting, and the story. Not by how small you look compared to a giant table. Zones that are small (though comfortable enough to fit the necessary groups), and decorated well are always going to be way cooler than giant furniture and massive ceilings. Conan, I'm looking at you!

2. Bow Animations might need some more fine tuning.

Don't hit me! I know that you developers are hard at work polishing everything. You're probably already got this on your list, and even though saying it might be null, I figured I might mention it anyway. I would love to see bows take longer to shoot. The below video shows some serious rapid firing of arrows as soon as they touch the bow. Extend the animation a little bit more and tweak damage to make up for the time it takes to notch and arrow, pull it back, and aim.

(I'd like to post a link to the video, and I'm unfamiliar with the ability to do so on these forums. So if you search youtube for ShoddyCast and their interview with Game-play Designer Nick Konkle, you'll get an idea of what I mean.)

3. Don't allow weapons to disappear when casting something.

Maybe keep the weapon in your hand, and have the spell shoot out of it anyway. Maybe swap the hand with which you shoot the spell from so that it does not erupt from the primary weapon holding hand. The entire time I was watching from first person, I kept thinking "Where did the bow go? The sword? Maybe they set it down on a rock and then cast the spell? No..that wouldn't be efficient at all. Clearly their friend is holding it for them. Right?"

4. Continue to ensure that you keep up with your graphics!

Thank you, thank you so much for not making your graphics a joke. Games like WoW, Rift, Guild Wars 2, and even the games that haven't been released yet (EQ next! What the HECK is that cat thing?) look poor in a side by side comparison of the EARLY game shots for this. Keep up the fantastic work. I want a little grit with my fantasy. I don't want to look like I should be chasing the roadrunner with hammer on a pair of rollerskates.

5. Mathor's beard changed to be the somewhat the same color as his hair.

He is one of the first dialogue option videos we've seen. He's the Nord fellow with the long beard.

I'd post the link once again, but seems I'm restricted for that..as well. Awh. At any rate...

Please..it..it's driving me insane. Oh god, the orange!

Welcome to the forums Veil, we had cookies but they were eaten quite some time ago. Some nice points, I especially agree with the bow animations (which we do know they are working on). The one thing I hope to see is...

Player Housing - Impressive and detailed Player and Guild Housing in an instanced themed to that zone neighbourhood, each 'neighbourhood instance' would be made up of approximately 40-50 player housing plots and one guild housing plot to build on. Purchase the land plot then purchase or craft the necessary items to eventually build your house. This should be a huge gold and time sink to give players a real sense of accomplishment when done, also the ability to expand on or remodel your house, display boss trophies, achievement trophies, etc. Maybe the neighbourhood players could also all work together to get shops, stalls, etc built in their instance through reputation quests. I want to feel like I have claimed a piece of the game world as my own.

That would really be my number one addition to what's looking to be a great game.

I agree with 1 and 3, it'd be nice if they didn't skip out on some of the little details that make the game look smoother and less intrusive.

As for the bow one, I'm not sure it would make sense to mess with such a sensitive balance area, but I do believe it's already "the longer you hold your bow, the more damage you do", Konkle in that video felt like spamming arrows legolas style I guess, but I agree, I hope the game encourages people pulling their bow all the way back rather than trying to use it as a machine gun.

Graphics, I personally am not impressed, I hope they're still making plans to improve it, or what we've seen is only a taste. Their art style is absolutely fantastic though, but I wish I could see a little bit more emphasis put on textures or lighting (ENBs might cure my need for good lighting). We're getting into an age where really good GPUs are getting affordable, so next gen games need to ramp it up again. But I'm probably biased because I'm about to spend ~ 450$ on a GPU + PSU.

As for 5. I've never been a beard guy myself, I don't want to trim it too short by getting involved with that discussion.
