In the wacky world of English place names, Dorking is pretty mild.

Granted, I was born in Missouri just a few miles away from Humansville. Yeah aliens, we're really going to buy that one.

Surely by definition the stereotype about Brits having crooked teeth is BS? Why would more people be born with crooked teeth in one nation than any other...?

Genetics.

I guess

I'm inclined to agree with Turns' explanation, however.

I believe it is the American obsession with whitening and straightening that causes that perception.

Not really. Plenty of nationalities have straight teeth. (Americans not so much, because a lot are of English decent.)

I hope people aren't getting offended by this talk. My ancestry gave me a big-ish nose. :P (Not Adrian Brody big, but still.) There's not much I can do about it, and I can't really be offended when people say, "race X" or "nationality Y has big noses".

I have naturally straight and white teeth. I noticed that the Chinese had absolutely awful teeth as a general rule when I visited. Funny how that's not a stereotype.

That chinese have bad teeth? I've never heard of it. Brits having bad teeth and bad food seems to be a lot more common. It's complete rubbish though.

I'm constantly being told how poor Chinese dental hygiene is. I think the reason you don't hear about it much is because it's not an English/Western culture. And the Chinese that you (the UK) do run into have usually undergone acculturation.

Brits having bad teeth and bad food seems to be a lot more common. It's complete rubbish though.

The bad teeth thing I can attest to. I have a lot of English friends and acquaintances, and a lot of them do have or have had bad teeth that they need to correct with braces/surgery. As for the food -- it used to be bad years ago, but it's changed a lot over the passed two or three decades.

Yeah that's true. My dad's side of the family is German, they have straight white teeth. My mom's side is Welsh and almost all of them have crooked teeth, me and my siblings had slightly crooked teeth because of this but we all ended up getting braces at one point or another. The stigma svcks, in the US if you have crooked teeth you're an inbred and if you have braces you're a geek.

Just a note: Dark Knight, I don't mean to give the impression that I know better than you what your country's like. I'm just saying that I'm under the impression that X, Y and Z... :)

Yes, most are automatics. You will have to actively seek to find a manual transmission.

I don't mean to sound rude, but you realize that most (if not all) stereotypes do come from at least a tiny percentage of a group having those characteristics. People don't usually just pull them out of their hats and say "hey! I think will be known as !" However unflattering that might be.

Edit: English helps when used correctly.
