Gimple's Approach:

Kirkman admits that the biggest flaw, and his only regret, about season three was the absence of character development. "There's going to be much less 'run-and-gun' this year; we want to strive for the balance we had in season one and the latter half of season two. It's a much more character-based story. It's going to be more focused on who these characters are and what they're going through. To a certain extent, we got away from that in season three. Coming into season four, we're definitely going to know a lot more about these people, so it will be that much more gut-wrenching and worse when we lose these characters. We're going to focus on fewer characters per episode; think of episode twelve, 'Clear,' in season three as a general tone for this year."

Stories:

"We're telling completely different stories. While the Governor is still out there and still a threat, we're going to see him in a new light and he won't appear until we least expect it. I don't think people are really going to be able to anticipate what we do with the Governor; it's going to be radically different. Once that story unfolds over the course of this season, people will see this is a very different story from season three and we are breaking some new ground with these characters. Also expect new places this year, the prison is their current home, but we cover a lot more ground outside of the prison this time around. How long will the prison last...you'll just have to wait and see."

Character Motivation:

"So much of the show has been kinetic and very much in the moment. I feel like now there's breathing space and you really feel the full impact of how it really is psychologically changing a lot of these people. What they're coming up with is very surprising. That's the main thing: you'll be very surprised by many of the characters' developments. And other characters that may be less at the forefront of the stories in the past -- they step up, and they're just great. You're in for a great treat."

"Rick has denounced his status of leadership in favor for being a father and a teacher, but his goals are still the same: keep these kids safe and growing up, but Rick's got his work cut out for him. He's aware of this, and he sees what allowing his son to become a child solider has brought, which is a very big part of season four and will pose a big challenge for Rick this year. Their relationship is a major focus."

"As we meet Michonne coming back this season, she's on a mission to hunt down the Governor. It's something she's very obsessed with. It's big part of her character this season. She did lose Andrea and she lost her because of the Governor. She's not willing to let that guy go or be out there. It's something that may possibly be to her detriment, the fact that she's so dedicated to finding this person."

"Bob will be someone who is familiar to the novel audience but we're definitely not married to doing those stories and could do different things there."

"As for the Governor..when you see what we do with him in season 4, you'll be like, 'Oh yeah, that is a great reason to keep that guy around.' It's gonna be some really cool and crazy stuff."

Comic Book:

On closer adaptation: "We are definitely going in some new directions and this will continue to be a different take on the material form the comics but there will be some scenes that are a little bit closer to the comic than we've done in the past. Season four has the most number of scenes that are adapted directly from the comic series. A good deal of that is from Scott and the way he views that material and puts forth that extra effort to work it into the show in a way that it all works. Comic readers will be pleasantly surprised this year!"

The Time Jump:

"There's going to be a bit of a time jump....it's only a few months, we're not nailing down the exact number of days or anything like that. The prison that we see is a very different prison and the characters that we see are very different from the last time we saw them. We go into season four with characters you've known for four years and still find new things to explore with them and new aspects of their character and see that they are growing and changing in extremely dramatic ways due to the strains that this world has put upon them."

Walkers:

"We always like to play the idea that walkers have been just sitting in the sun and turning leathery, decomposing, and they’re just really nasty. So every season we do dozens of new sculptures. And we’re always modifying the contact lenses and the dentures. You will start to see how long-term deterioration, decomposition, weather, etc. has affected walkers this year. Expect more ravenous walkers as well. It's been around a year now since Wildfire and as time goes on we want to really show that walkers are getting hungrier and looking more 'disgusting' than ever. "Don't expect my zombies to evolve or anything like that," Kirkman says, "that's Romero's spin, mine just keep rotting." This season we've probably surpassed Season 1 and Season 2 completely in terms of numbers of walkers."

Props master, John Sanders, talked to AMC about some new weapons fans can look forward to on Season 4, and how they will be used to fight walkers. “My favorite implement will be this season,” John said. “I've been waiting for two years, trying to talk to Greg Nicotero and getting AMC to allow it, I..I can't really tell you what it is, but I can tell you it's going to be the craziest thing on the show, yet. What I can say is that walkers are going to get killed in newer ways this year than any other year before.”

There's also http://www.tvguide.com/News/Walking-Dead-Season-4-New-Characters-1067811.aspx this year; "one that's uncontrollable, almost undefeatable that is going to come in when the characters are at their most vulnerable. It's really going to be something that they have a hard time dealing with."

"You can’t just stab in the face, you can’t talk sense to it. You can’t make a truce with it. It’s beyond all that. It would be a threat in any world, but in this world it is much more terrifying.” -http://popwatch.ew.com/2013/07/17/this-weeks-cover-season-4-walking-dead/

"This new threat is the thing that overall is the thing for us. The zombies are the same threat that they've always been but with this added extra that makes the world a very, very dangerous place. And people start to sort of react in different ways. It's not a threat you're going to be able to kill very easily. So it's something that happens within the world. Another thing. And that is very dangerous. It's very dangerous and I think when you see it you'll… there's a lot of identity with it, for us in our world. You'll get it when you see it. Each person reacts to it very differently." -http://io9.com/the-governor-tells-us-why-the-walking-dead-is-deadlier-872741152

"A new threat will present itself to the humans this season, and it's something that cannot be killed. The threat will be apparent by the end of the season premiere and will launch a narrative arc that will keep the jeopardy level high for all the episodes." Nicotero said he and showrunner Scott Gimple made the decision that they wanted the threat to be "ever-constant and ever-present" in the new season. "So we've devised ways to put our characters in instantaneous jeopardy," Nicotero said. "That is something that was really important to us, because that is the world we live in, which is that danger could come out of anything. It was really important that we re-establish the rules of our world." -http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/25/showbiz/tv/walking-dead-preview

http://www.wetpaint.com/walking-dead/articles/why-andrea-well-see-why-it-was-a-good-decision-on-the-walking-dead-season-4: Andrea died on the Season 3 finale, instead of keeping her alive for any number of alternate story-lines. "The unfortunate thing is that you're not really going to see why this was a good decision and good for the show until Season 4. We thought having that tragic end to her storyline — having [Andrea] work so hard to save these people of Woodbury and find a peaceful resolution to this conflict was really something worthy of the character. It's also something that changes Rick's mindset and alters a lot of the characters and their modes of operation moving into the fourth season. It seemed like the right thing to do at the right time." -Kirkman

New Characters:

I would put these names in the "Minor Spoilers: Character.." section, but I think it's too big of a spoiler for that, if they're who we think they are:

(Any fan of the comic should know these three characters from the descriptions alone.)

John Tyler - Early 30's, vulgar with rough edges but wise.
Wayne Kesey - Early 30's. Very smart and an experienced liar.
Jordana Barraza - Late 20's tough Hispanic and beautiful. Shamed about her past.

Considering their descriptions (only a bit younger) and their time of entry, roughly, they seem to correlate to Abraham, Eugene and Rosita...or they could be part of the 'Hunters' or just random new people...

You know, those premier numbers only account for people that watch the show on TV. Think about how many people watch the show online, such as myself.

I wasn't really happy with the premier. Some interesting things are happening and are going to happen but for the most part it was just alot of talk and I predicted what would happen the moment Rick came across that woman. I just hope this season isn't going to just be more talk even with the promise of more action.

Kind of ironic since you were criticising World War Z for being an action shoot em up, yet you're saying you want Walking Dead to be an action shoot em up.

Not by a long shot. I am not talking fast super zombies with roid rage crap like the movie World War Z turned out to be compared to the book.

I am just getting tired of characters sitting around and talking. Talking about the samething over and over again. It gets old and I don't want another season of sitting around a farm house. The first episode of season four was hinting at some interesting things to come, but most of it was just talking, talking about the stuff they were talking about last season.

It also seems odd that with more and more zombies coming every day, they are doing little to impove their situation other then having people stand around the fence killing the walkers, which in the end just draws more to the fence.

It was still a good episode but it didn't have as great of impact as I thought it would and as I said the thing with Rick to me was predictable so it wasn't that great. But there were things that changed my theories I had before the start of the season as to what was going to happen so that is a plus.

Edit: by predictable I mean the moment he came across her I knew where it was going as if I had already watched the episode before and there were other things as well but that was the biggest thing and it eat up a good chunk of the show.

I have not seen the show in any form, but I read the title and wondered if this thread was about the video game by Tell Tale Games. Any connection there, or am I totally out of the loop?

I couldn't help but wonder...

Spoiler
... why they returned to that nasty prison, anyway. The town of Woodbury was still in tact and seemingly more secure than that weak ass fence. That thing is doomed to fail with enough Walkers pushing on it. Woodbury had a rather sound perimeter. Not to mention all the army vehicles and artillery. You know the town still had all kinds of supplies.

Spoiler
at the very least learn from Woodbury and put things in front of the fence so the Walkers can't see you on the other side. Get some plywood or sheet metal, cars old skids of wood and create another wall in that catwalk just to block the walkers view of you. They have the guard towers which it looks like they have repared them to see over the fence to look out for threats. Another good defense are those wooden stakes they set up by their new gate which they copied from Morgan but they didn't apply that to all around the fence line.

I know.. right?

Spoiler

Those X-brace barricades are possibly the most efficient first line of defence one can construct. They are minimal material with a renowned return. Hell, there's enough trees in the immediate area to suffice. No need to trek across the county to scarf supplies.

Still, the town would have been a better choice, IMO.

Remember the trailer for the season where Sasha

Spoiler
finds dead rats by the fence and asks if someone is feeding the walkers?

my guess

Spoiler
is that girl who was leading the group of other kids talking to the walkers along the fence, that one walker with the name tag and Carl gets mad and tells them that the Walkers are dead and they shouldn't be named and that girl argued that they they weren't dead.. I think her and the other kids are "feeding the walkers" or something like that. If I was Carl I would have had Hershel come and sit their asses down and explain to them that Walkers are dead and that it was foolish to think otherwise from his own experience.

Also on the note of forshadowing

Spoiler
there was also that scene were there was a swarm of ants covering that giant beetle.

My thoughts on some stuff said about the newest season...

Spoiler

Honestly no reaso why the couldn't have constructed more barricades, except maybe it was too dangerous? No clue really.

As for talking, I liked the episode immensely. Really liked the character development, which usually stems from talking and not mindless zombie killing. Season 2, in retrospect, wasn't that bad, it's just there wasn't enough action compared to the week break in between.

Overall, like the direction of this season.
