The Witcher Series (including Enhanced Edition!), v?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 4:38 am

Thought I'd make another since the last one got to post limit.

In any case,

Playing Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition, for my 2nd playthrough I never really did after I beat it the first time around on release

Lots of fun, pretty awesome how fresh it feels with dark mode and the fact that there is SO much content you miss out on by only doing one play through in one style. Installed a mod to make it so dark mode items aren't so crazy to get though (you basically have to grind for hours to get them normally).

Game is still one of the best looking games released. Especially your character model - so damn good. And now that I'm already familar with the story/characters/lore, the story actually makes more sense to me now and actually *sticks*.

Remembered one of my old tricks just a little bit ago that is seriously helping me survive dark mode. Never let Geralt complete a combo! Put in 2-3 hits, dodge... 2-3 hits, dodge... The moment he starts doing a combo, you really end up leaving yourself open as he just jumps into an unstoppable animation, while everything else can still openly wail on you. And combo hits don't do any more damage than normal attacks, so they are a huge disadvantage to wait for Geralt to pull off some fancy move before actually landing his hits. Just hit and run :P

Chapter 2 with dark mode on, it's providing a negligible challenge for me. I've improved a lot since the first time I played last year. I remember fighting Letho the first time seemed impossible. This time it only took me three tries. Game is fantastic though.

Letho was pretty easy for me just beacuse I had about 20 snare traps and just placed them everywhere :P

I also just started playing (normal diff on 360) and am enjoying it. I usually prefer the open environments of Skyrim/Oblivion/F03, but the characters, combat and engaging story are compensating thus far. I am trying to understand the "mechanics" of the game. I dont quite understand the looting/inventory aspects of the game. Whenever I enter someone's home, it seems that I can take items from containers with impunity. I am used to "sneaking" and/or paying attention to whether I can "take" an item, or if I am "stealing" it in Beth games. Does the witcher employ this aspect when taking items? Or can I continue to just help myself to anything in anyone's home without fear of reprisal?

I cheaped him my first playthrough too. I used the bomb glitch where he gets stuck in his wounded animation each time he is hit. Essentially stun locked, didn't work this time. :P

There's one in the OP - never complete combos, only put a few swings in then dodge (preferably behind someone to get a bonus in damage).

Use Quen OFTEN, it is a failsafe - it'll stop all daamge for one or two hits. You don't regenerate Vigor (stamina) though with it active.

Good use of Parry is helpful too. Be warned though, you still take light damage when you parry, and each hit you block will drain your vigor by one pip (but you can stay blocked forever). This is especially bad as you take extra damage when fatigued (zero vigor).

Don't forget to use bombs, potions, and oils. Traps too, if you prefer. The game is designed to have you use them - if you dont, you will have a hard time.

Save often!

Witcher works like a classic RPG - in that there is no real crime system in the game, because the game isn't really designed to be a complex fantasy simulation like Elder Scrolls.

I haven't used a potion in forever. I think only a few times, and this is on Dark Mode. Once you get the hang of combat, there just isn't much point. I still have many of my starting potions form Chapter 1 unused. I do on occasion toss some bombs into swarms. Generally when I do want to use a potion it has a gigantic cinematic making the potion run out during the cinematic. This just makes me too lazy to use potions, because the only time I really want them is when I can't usually use them. It's pretty silly, but if your just starting out potions can be a life saver. I know in my first playthrough I used them a lot more.

I think I'm stuck at a quest and can't complete it.

Pokerface:flotsam

Spoiler
I haven't defeated any of the opponenets. I did the troll quest. Still need a trolls tounge. I'm past the part with the riot. Alota people in the tavern are missing

I guess I'm done with this quest?

It looks like it, I think you need to do sidequests prior to that quest.

Yeah, you need to finish up your sidequests first before doing anything with the main quests. That's a rule of thumb with the Witcher games.

Not entirely true, but generally when you have two choices in a game like The Witcher, and any other classic-style RPG that says "YES, I'm ready to go" or "No, I'm not ready to go" in relation to the main quest, if you pick YES, that's basically a no-return part that indicates you are going to move on to the next act or special event in the game, which will cancel out any unfinished or unstarted side quests.

I've had quests cut off before without realizing that I was advancing to a point of no return.

This game wasn't like that. I wasn't simply able to finish all the side quests before "Yes I'm ready"

But I like it. Its fresh, [censored]s with your head, and reminds you to be on top of your game.

I've had this game for a while (got it super-cheap during a Steam sale) and just started playing it last week. On the PC version with all of the eye candy turned on it's hands-down one of the prettiest and most atmospheric games I've ever played. Fun too, although I'm not a huge fan of all the quick-time events. Is there anything like the Realistic Lighting mod for Skyrim for this game? Using that mod with Skyrim made interiors look 100% better, IMO. I'd love to give this game the same treatment. I wish game devs wouldn't make interiors in RPGs so freaking bright...it makes everything look fake.
