Yes there is a death penalty. It's a experience debt penalty. So if you die you gain debt and you can't get anymore experience until you "payoff" the debt.

This is confirmed??

I just assumed it would be a skill reduction and/or armor breakage, like most new MMOs tend to go with.

If this is based on Beta info then the thread will likely get deleted just like the Class and armor skill threads were.

Nah, an exp debt. In the video it looked like it was a percentage of your current exp or required exp or something. At level 1 he was in debt with like 2 or 3 exp after 2 deaths, it didn't look significant, atleast at low levels.

This is based off the infamous video. The experience debt was shown in it so I'm going to say that is what they are going to stay with unless they decide to change their mind.

And no it's not based off money it's all about experience. Say that I die, now I have 500 exp debt. I won't be able to gain anymore experience till I get rid of this debt. So I have to do quests or kill mobs till I get rid of the debt and then I can start leveling again. They did this type of system in City of Heroes and I enjoyed it. It svcked though at higher levels and you kept dying when you had experience debt, because it accumulates. There can be times where you will have one WHOLE level of experience debt you will have to payoff before you can start leveling again.

He was level 1 at the time, it's reasonable that the amount scales as a percentage of your required xp per level. At level 30 or 40, that 1 xp might scale to several hundred or thousand, which could end up adding a lot of extra time to those levels.

I started to wonder what the penalty would be at level cap, but then I realized we'll probably still be able to gain exp for skills/gear even while level capped at 50. I like the debt idea, I wonder if they'll take it a step further and add in deleveling FFXI-style.

IIRC, Vanguard did the xp debt idea. I remember a few people at max level let themselves die a massive number of times because they couldnt lose level and they figured it didnt matter anymore. Then the level cap got raised and it did matter. They had to pay off that debt before they could start leveling again.

I prefer this death penalty over experience lose. It's a good middle ground between having no death penalty and the more severe experience lost.

I like it alot more than just taking a dent to our gear. Its gonna svck sometimes, but man I'd like it if a game stepped into a slightly more hardcoe direction than we've been heading in lately with the genre.

Nice idea I think it's fair, does it apply if you die whilst pvping in cyrodill or will that be an exception? I'm guessing most people will be dying often here so will that be different do you think?

I don't think we know yet if it applies in PvP or not. I'm sort of torn on if I want it to personally. It would definitely add a new layer of "u mad bro" to being the ass instead of the foot.

I doubt there will be an xp debt penalty for AvA. And since you can get xp in AvA it sounds like an excellent way to pay off an xp debt gained in PvE

Died in PvE and incurred a debt you don't want to add to? Great! Go out to AvA and pay it off by taking it out on the AD and BP!

I'm thinking AvA will have an equipment degradation death penalty as well as possible money sink to get back to the battle location from where you rez.

That actually seems a very nice way of engaging everyone in pvp at some point too.
