There's a mouse hiding in my room. What do I do?

Post » Sun Sep 08, 2013 2:53 am

To be honest I'm mostly just posting this to keep myself entertained while I'm waiting for the thing to come out or something, because now that I know mice can climb up beds and fabric and stuff, I'm not sleeping until I find it. Plus I thought it might be fun to share this wacky adventure of mine!

Unless that's against the forum rules, in which case, I'm so sorry mods.

So, my cat brought it on to my bed while I was reading a book, and obviously the mouse was still alive while it was in the cats mouth. I didn't consider that and, in a fit of confusion and terror, I slapped my cat in an attempt to get it off the bed, but that just caused her to drop it, and for the rat/mouse/whatever the [censored] to run underneath my bed. I chased it out of several hiding spots by moving a bunch of the furniture around, and now I think it may have crawled into a vent that wasn't covered...

Now I have to decide if I should wake everyone up to let them know that a mouse could crawl across their face at any moment while they're sleeping, or, take a gamble and hope that I can catch it before I have to let everyone know, and then this will just be a silly harmless story tomorrow morning.

Now, in order for this thread to actually have any potential for discussion, I'll just make this the unofficial vermin discussion thread. I'll start it off by asking, has this kind of thing ever happened to you, and if so, what did you do? Do you have any mouse hunting tips for me? What should I do if the rat did crawl in the vent? I NEED HELP! ;(

Don't tell me you guys aren't the expert mouse hunters I've always considered you to be.

There is annoying cricket in my room again! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFkFo5SBx-g Brother or Sister!!!!! They infest the house this time of the year and I have to be on ever alert status before they build up to critical insanity inducing levels as they chirp all night. A few years back me and my younger cousin declared war on them because we couldn't get any sleep. In two hours we cleared out about 30-40 of the bastards. And were finding more the next day, and it took us two weeks to get rid of every last little one. Then continuous alert status to prevent them building up again. It got so bad they were crawling over people occasionally in the night.

I [censored] hate the little bastards. That's my war story.

Kill it. Kill it with fire!. But really... kill it or get rid of it if you can without waking anyone up. If possible, lock it in a room until morning. Or you could capture it and raise it as your own, since mice aren't bad at all. They're cute, actually. Don't kill it if it's cute. And mice are kind of large. Killing it would leave a mess. Yeah... don't kill it. Let it breed.

I was trying to pick it up with a glove on but it was too fast, and I can't step on it, I'd never be able to eat off that floor again. But whatever I would have done with it no longer matters it seems. I'm pretty sure it escaped from my room and into the vents as I expected. Since that's the only open vent in the house and I just blocked it up hopefully it will die in there. Except for the part where that would actually be really bad.

I feel a bit calmer now, but there's not much I can do about the situation now. He will make the next move.

Just leave the cat around, best way to get it, ive had lots of mice in my workroom, they have lots of things to hide behind and leave trails of waste, i set small traps but they kept taking the bait, i caught about 3 but the rest wouldnt get near the traps, if i can get near them i will hit them with something heavy and turn them into a red paste, we have birds so they they go straight for the seed also a walnut tree which they love when the walnuts drop. They got into a wheat bag in the shed the whole top of the bag was full of mice, after i had finished it was just a large red mess, they are vermin and will chew through anything if given the chance, so get rid of any you find, never take the chance to leave them to chew through your power cables or get into your food cupboards.

Put double sided duct-tape on the legs supporting your bed, or normal duct-tape inside out.

Works for bedbugs too.

If you see one mouse you'll likely have a handful of them.

The old-fashioned spring-loaded traps work a treat, snaps the neck, no fuss, no cruelty. Contrary to many a cartoon it is best not to use cheese in the traps.

Peanutbutter or bacon work a good deal better.

Mice are territorial and the males stay out of each others way. So you will have to set more than one trap in different locations of the house.

I normally just use poison, it works really well I haven't had any problems, traps can get REALLY messy if the trap snaps head or nose---trust me it's not a pretty sight  . However lately my house got invaded by roaches and now I can't get rid of them, I have roach spray and roach hotels with five star commendation. I will never use roach bait again, that crap does not work as roaches can build a tolerance to it.

Stop feeding the cat. A well fed cat sees the mouse as a toy and won't kill it. I get mice all the time. I'm actually quite adept at catching them. 90% of the time I release them in a field to be eaten by birds or I shoot them with a BB gun.

I have found that a shop vac is good for svcking up things like spiders and ants, and it might work for a mouse.

Is it a mouse or rat? If the former, ignore it, i doubt your car would have a rat in its mouth though. If the latter, no holds barred death match!!!
