Is there really enough ore to make smithing viable?

With up to 8 or more ores required per item and ore not respawning for a month of ingame time, is there really enough ore in the game to make smithing viable?

I think Smithing covers all the armors of all the people. So basically, you have to sell to npcs for a profit if you want to upgrade, since no one will actively look at you and think 'I want it!'
