Is There a Safe Way to Black Mountain?

Post » Wed Mar 02, 2011 8:21 am

I'm level 12 and am trying to do Crazy, Crazy, Crazy. Unfortunately, the State of Utobitha is completely surrounded by deathclaws. Is there a safer way? There might be a route through Hidden Vally.

You can get to Black Mountain from the other side from Helios One and the El Dorado substation. You basically have to pick your way along the mountain side. Depending on how high up on the mountain side you are you will probably completely miss Neil's cabin. Just keep steering back towards the big dish on top of the mountain. And yes I believe you can get to Black Mountain thru Hidden Valley. Just don't head west/left when you hit Neil's cabin and the road or you'll run into death claws.

Yes if You go from Hekios One and past the cave and climb on the hillside near Diablo, the map marker will be added to You map and You can fast travel to the collapsed dish near the top of the mountain.

(I usually take the route through hidden valley(watch it at night for brotherhood patrols), past the crater with the Centaurs, and through the gate right at the top of the mountain behind the transmitter building tabitha is in.)

I usually just head straight on for the challenge but if I want a more subtle approach I climb the mountain from the north-eastern side and sneak past the mutants.

I usually take the route from Hidden Valley up. Stopping long enough to lob some grenades at the centaurs in the crater.

One time I came via Hidden Valley and emerged right above Neil's cabin, but the simplest way for me was straight east from Sloane (through a mess of bark scorpions), curving north to Neil's cabin. One deathclaw showed up later, behind me on the road up the mountain, but combining fire with ED-E and Arcade Gannon took it down.

You can also approach BM via the salt flats north of HELIOS-1. There are a handful of Fire Ants there (of which at least one is always a Soldier), however these are easily dealt with and crossing the flats puts you at the NE 'corner' of BM which is readily scaled until you hit a ridge; follow this around for a short distance and it will dump you out on the path just below the overturned radar dish. WARNING: this will also put you in the middle of 4-6 heavily-armed Super Mutants. At lower levels these will be Brutes, at higher, Masters. and their armaments will upgrade accordingly.
