So my thief is rich. Now what?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 4:46 pm

I made a character who wanted to be a master thief. I wanted to play as a master thief.

So I escaped from Helgen, learned where the thief's guild was, and beelined over to there to get rich. I finished all of the thief quests. I worked over (B&E, pickpocketing, etc.) just TWO cities of the game. I'm now sitting on about 100k after having purchased the most expensive residence in the game and its upgrades. I've crafted myself FAR better equipment than I can find anywhere else.

Now what?

Keep in mind that I'm not an assassin, I'm not a do-gooder paladin, and I'm not a cartographer. My character exists because I have fun being a thief (sneaking around, stealing stuff, breaking out of jail, wishing that two of my perk trees weren't entirely pointless, etc.)... however I don't have nearly enough fun doing those things when there is no point to them beyond just doing them to keep playing my thief.

Is there more for me to do with this character that would make sense for this character, or is it time for me to make and play something else?

You're delving too deeply into one playstyle. The game wasn't designed for you to actually play a thief. The supporting systems aren't there.

Is there anything to gamble on in Skyrim? I haven't fully explored all the cities yet. If there is, go develop a habit. :P If not, then they missed a trick.

You could RP a Robin Hood type and give it away I suppose.

Have you bought horses? make yourself up a stable of 'em. I've seen a wardog for sale somewhere too, but not sure where.

You could give all your money to Riverwood, those poor sods don't even have a wall.

You've won. You've accomplished the goals you set for yourself. Now it's time to either set new goals for that character, or start a new character with different goals. You might become a collector of art... or items found in the game. That would give your thief skills a work out. The 20 some odd "unusual gems" would be a good target.

Exactly. I've run to the end of the road on my mage and warrior, now it's assassin time for me on my third character.

Do you need a quest to steal? Do you need a quest to sneak around? Do you need someone to tell you to go get something?

It's time to embrace the Role Playing aspect of the game, which is to play your role. Go steal the world blind. I can't wait to roll my Thief Character. My current Dudley Do Right won't even steal Argonian Ale for a drunk. My Thief will take everything that is not nailed down. Also, there is no greater challenge than to loot a dungeon without killing anyone or anything in there. See how many places you can clean out but leave everyone alive.

Start a new character and try something different like a mage or a warrior.

How dare you post such a blasphemous question.

The wrath of the Dovahkids will be unleashed upon you shortly.

Well, back to topic. I had exactly the same problem. I simply got too rich too fast by looting everything at higher levels. Now I have approx. 300.000 gp and - well - and what? I started a mage and had to learn that there is no spellcrafting in Skyrim. And that I can become guildmaster without being even master of the arcane arts. Well...

It's assassin time for me on every character. I only wish for my mage assassin there was a "burning alive" animation, complete with shreaks of agony or pleas for help.

I'd pay good money for a "Elaborate & Sadistic Deaths" DLC. :celebration:

You quoted me saying that robbing when there is no point to being rich, sneaking when there is no reason to be unseen, etc., is not fun enough in and of itself for me to do it... but then you said what you said. Le sigh.

And implying that what I did already was NOT roleplaying? The only characters who would go around stealing everything when there is no point to it are the character's roleplaying those hoarder folk on A&E or discovery or whatever. It's not like if I go steal a crown off of a jarl I can go show it to the thief's guild and have them ooh and ahh over it. It's not like I start to hear rumors whispered in the streets about "that ghost of a thief who stole everything valuable in the whole city" after I do exactly that. Etc.

Your answer to my "Now what?" is basically just "You should make up more stuff to do."

No thanks. If I wanted to entertain myself with imaginationland, I'd be doing just that, and I'd be doing it for $60 less than I spent on this game. I'm not opposed to making new characters to do new/different things in this game, but I'm certainly not going to force trying to find things to entertain myself with a character that is at a dead end.

I beg to differ!

I've been playing a rogue for some time now. While there is lacking content, there is definatly systems available for it.

I've found a few trinkets randomly that were of interest to someone in the Thief Guild. Go do some dungeon diving.

The question is, do you find the stealing to be fun, or the ability to spend the money you got by stealing?

If the stealing is the fun part, then the fact that you've got nothing to spend the money on shouldn't matter.

(I still dungeon raid & loot stuff, because - beyond the first few levels when your really need it - I'm not in it for the money. I'm in it for the looting. Of course, I've never had this burning need to have "more gold sinks!" that some people have been begging for in Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim threads for years. I see the large gold balance as a sign of success, not a lack of things to buy.)
